When told I wouldn't get a raise I asked for an explanation of what I would need to do for a raise. Was told they'd have to get back to me
I followed up a month later. Was told they were still waiting. Haven't asked a third time. They let my peer go at the end of last year. I'm the only IT guy for over 600 people and they were sweating me this AM over notes on two tickets. I have 3 dozen items in my queue. Not sure they even know.
In that moment right now. I liked my job it was okay until the boss left for health reasons and was no longer the buffer to the main boss. I'm working on $750,000 contracts, HR work, I recovered the password for both the internet and gas bills so they're 2FA to my phone number. And I'm only getting $2 above minimum.
I was the go-getter gal years ago. But mostly circumstances were different, too. I had more flexibility to choose what I did with tech earlier in life. I never worked hard to impress anyone, I was just focused and having fun. I was lucky to have other geeks who teamed with me and basically, we were playing. We all did get some raises and recognition -- and the more of that we got the weirder it got, for me. I'm not that gal anymore, burn-out is a bitch.
I work in a school and this feels relevant. The teachers get awesome pay all year round, even the holidays when they don’t work. Then there is the teaching assistants who get shit pay, only for the school terms, so when there is no school, there is no pay. The teachers teach, the TA’s do everything else, sometimes, even taking the teachers role when the teacher is out. The pay grade and pay conditions seem incredibly one sided to me.
your school system seems lucky the teachers get their full pay, or have the TA's just been callign them selves teachers? i mean i dont see why not cause they do a good chunk of stuff. but yeah out here in the boonies even the teachers dont seem to get their fair pay so can only imagine how those TA are getting shafted if the ones in good school districts are already shafted
No, they weren't. There is a young guy who started a couple years ago at my husband's job and he just sucks so very, very, very badly. I hate that guy. All he does is fuck up and fuck around. Makes more work for the hubs who has to correct his fuck ups.
Do people have different definitions of "go-to guy" than I do? To me a go-to guy is the person who has all the answers, can explain anything to you, or point you to the right person who can. But people seem to be using it interchangeably with go-getter, which is someone who constantly works their ass off. I'm a go-to guy (well, gal) at work and I'm definitely not a go-getter. And I do get paid well, plus job retention basically guaranteed. I probably work less than anyone on my team.
Lmao absolutely. I liked the company I work for and then they decided nobody is getting raises or promotions last year. So I calculated how much I need to do to hit my targets each week and that's about all I do.
I just got offered the chance to interview as a supervisor in a different department at work. I do as little as possible in my current dept. Way more stress for not much more money... No Ma'am.
Personal financial expert here. There's the capitalists (owner class). They have all the work done for them by the second type, the worker class. Now the worker class I generally divide into two groups. Those that are paid a living wage and those that aren't. Easy way to find out! If single, google rent prices in your area for studio/one bedroom. If with someone, two bedroom. Take that rent and multiply by 4. If you don't make that per month, you don't make a living wage.
Example, I make roughly $2000/month. Average rent in Vancouver, WA for a one bedroom is $1500/month. Obviously, Kroger doesn't pay me a living wage so I spend as much time f'ing off as possible. How much would be a living wage? $1500 x 4 = $6000. I communicate this to my boss and fellow co-workers. Try doing the same morons. ALL finance experts agree 1/2 income should cover ALL living expenses. Rent/utilities/food/all medical/transportation to work. Even spending 25% of income on rent is a LOT!
This is totally what it should be! Friend of mine just experienced this. Was THE guy for everything and still got laid off. Minimal effort for the win, folks!
Generally speaking, the way around this situation (if you find yourself in it) is to apply for a higher paying job elsewhere while you are still employed. You can often force upward mobility by abandoning company loyalty if they're not going to invest in you.
Is it at all important to mention which kinds of jobs this works at considering that low level retail and food service businesses don't give a fuck about the pressure you try to exert?
I didn't say anything about applying pressure. I'm not talking about negotiation tactics. I'm talking about securing a promotion by changing companies. If you're employed as a cashier at business A, you can apply for a position as senior cashier at business B. Where it won't work is in gig economy like uber drivers and such where there may be a lack of tiered positions for which businesses are hiring.
My dad dished out a nugget of wisdom to me when I was younger, he said "Son, you work way too hard to ever get anywhere in life". That's not to say that I was literally working too hard, it's that I was focused on the wrong work. If an employer does not respect the work you do and won't reciprocate with proper pay or benefits, find a new employer - plenty of them out there.
Only works if you can get a new job. I’ve been looking for a new job off and on for about 3 years now. Furthest I’ve gotten is a rejection letter written by a real human.
They like certificates and training and all that bs too. Even the bad ones, usually. Just gotta hound em a bit more about it. And if they don't, then as you said: find a new employer that does.
First job I ever had was at a builders merchant. Walked in off the street, asked for a job, two weeks later I was working there. They trained me on forklift, HIAB, banksman, first aid, and many other safety courses and proper tool handling courses. I didn’t pay for any of it. That was 19 years ago. I wonder if there are still companies that work like that with new employees.
I was born in 96 (to give a relative timeline) and several jobs I’ve had have paid for any training or certs I needed. The only place that DIDN’t was Planet Fitness who insisted I pay for my own CPR courses out of pocket to be eligible for the job. Most willing to pay was Home Depot for forklift certs cause Rell really wanted another FO in the warehouse.
I work for a global security company and that's exactly how we hire for our technicians. If you're trainable we'll offer a job. All tools, company vehicle, certifications, etc are on us because we want to ensure we have someone that WE qualified going out and performing the job functions to our specification.
Yup, I'm underpaid, but I can't get them to review my position, as a bunch of other dudes from my department already lined up for a review, even though they are shit at what they do and slack off half the day.
One of them was denied already and threw a hissy fit for a week.
I mean, maybe I'm shit at what I'm doing too, but I wouldn't know since my boss isn't able to schedule a 30min 1on1 with me, to talk about my work.
dont be sorry, the more people that share their experiences the more anonymous evidence we all have when we have to fight with dipshits that say hard work is rewarded when we are all starting to learn that not all hard work is rewarded and instead sometimes its looked over if you have train someone to fill your already capable shoes before you leave... and many more examples i have read
Nah, I don’t care about slackers unless they create problems or impede my work. But if they’re able to game the system without affecting me, more power to them.
To be fair, I used something similar to that in my last annual review and got a hefty pay rise. I'm still paid about 15k less than avg for my role, but previously it was more like 21k
The video is of him talking to his boss, however he had someone else do the voice for the video, doesn't state why, possibly for privacy reasons as he loves his boss. He then says that it's not her fault as she's just a department manager. His boss thought about it for a while then asked him to please do his job while they were there as he, his boss, and most of the staff were getting laid off in a couple of weeks yet still had to do these reviews. He said what he did as he had nothing to lose.

Here's a comprehensive list of the ways in which I've ever received a meaningful raise:
1) Quit for a better job

that guy isnt a slacker. slacker just means doing the bare minimum. that guy is actively fucking things up and causing problems, he's an asshole.

My manager makes 2.5x what I do as an IT contractor and the company we work for gives like 6-7% raises each year. Unless you're a contractor
austinwizardforhire
I'm one of the fortunate few I guess. I've gotten a raise every year, often quite substantial.
I do work really hard but I'm compensated reasonably well.
