This is dumb, but

Sep 23, 2025 2:34 AM

About $10 of canned tuna and shrimps. It"s nothing wild. I just feel bad throwing away perfectly good food. I dont think i can stomach it though. I know it's a stupid mental block, but can someone tell me it's ok?

Edit. Thank you all. I think i know how to reconcile my conscience now.

OP, it’s okay to throw it away, but wouldn’t you rather put it outside so it’ll feed a critter?

Do it when you can in your in time. Plenty of us understand and have been in the same spot probably more than once. Don't fight with yourself over it. You'll know.

Ifit is still sealed, donate it to an animal shelt or somethiing

If unopened and not expired, donate it to your local shelter. If opened, raccoons will love it.

Put out for stray cats or throw it away. Your car wants other creatures to be happy.n

Cant. It was his. He shpuld have still been here to eat it himself. Ive eaten eveything else from the fridge, but i just cant. Im struggling with flashbacks. Like i said, it's dumb. But there's compromises. I can do those

Dump the food (in an appropriate place) for the outdoor critters to enjoy. You bought it to make an animal happy. You can still complete that quest.

Ive been liking this idea a lot. Something in the back yard has been enjoying Azazel's victims. Even being leashed he managed to snag a few critters who wandered too close. I always laid them to rest in the bushes and they were always gone by morning

It's okay to throw it out.

I'm sorry for your loss.

Of course its okay, even if it doesn't feel okay... and that's okay too... sorry for your loss ❤️

Of course its ok. Or, give it to someone who could use it if you feel bad for throwing it away?

It's okay. Do what you gotta do.

We still hang our cat's old toys on the Christmas tree. Furry spit covered mice all over the place.

All his favorites are in a jasper bowl on his memorial shelf and a big box of all torn up felted mice. Some things i just had to hold on to for him

I understand perfectly. Yea, hang on to them... I love getting them out once a year. lol

Can you throw it in your yard or out back of the house? Let the bugs eat it. Don’t let food go to waste.

3 weeks ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That's what's killing me. I hate food waste. So many are hungry. I just see the shrimps and the flashbacks come

I would rather see you donate to a local to you animal rescue group, who knows? Your next friend may be there waiting for you

It is absolutely OK, @OP.

I hope your evening is full of fond memories.

Im trying to focus on them. I keep fighting off the flashbacks of the final moments. He was a very good boi

Give it to your local humane society. Tell them it was your pet’s favorite. Tell them a story about your pet…

They know. They got probably $500+ in cat stuff from me. His memories can touch as many little hearts as possible and i can start fresh when im ready.

You've done right by him and others <3. Save an item or two (like your boy's personal plates, it's ok to never let another pet touch them), donate the rest and start fresh when you're ready for another friend. Passing the food along to help yard animals is part of that

plenty of alley cats and raccoons that will gladly partake.

Such a good idea!!

It's ok to throw it away. Keep their bowl but make sure you give it a good wash after you empty it. It's not forgetting them it's keeping a memory alive.

Thanks. He used plates cause he was a picky little thing. They are safely stored now

It's okay. Put them outside and let the neighborhood critters partake. It's better to share than just toss. And maybe a stray will find you, and you'll both feel better.

Great idea!!

Maybe the tuna. Maybe the neighbors will like the shrimps. I only used like 4 out of the bag

Human neighbors count too.

One of my favorite characters from breaking bad

Your cat would rather someone else enjoyed them

I dont have anyone else. No family, spouce, or kids. He was my everything

Then you find yourself a rescue. They always need help. You might not be ready to open your heart again but that's no reason to keep the love tinned up forever. And we both know they are certain that those cans are full of love. And when the time comes, if the time comes, you will have an open heart and your will know that you helped.

I know it helps some people, but i cant. Emotionally i cant be there for a new kitty. Im too hurt right now. Realistically, my Azazel sadly brought home fleas from the ER in july. Id have to at the very least know they're gone first

3 weeks ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

You have got this. It hurts like fuck, I know. They hope in your heart is the space they left, and the folly would be trying to fill out with someone else. That pain is how we honour their loss, because it wouldn't be there if we never cared. You won't forget your cat, not ever. But some cat sitting waiting for a further home in a shelter will appreciate it.
