During my hostile environment training I learned that its always safest to be on the periphery of a crowd/riot, near the walls.

We were crushed in a rammstein concert and lifted off our feet for twenty minutes. Could barely breathe. Lost a shoe. Ribs black next day.

I've been in a scary crowd crush in school.. An exit was blocked, we were trying to leave as the new classes entered.. Teachers shouting >
"stop" did absolutely nothing.. I kind of blame the school for installing a sort of "if you're late, you're in trouble" mentality. Rather >
late and safe, than end up in hospital, which 2 people did.
aristera
holy shit. where school?
Quite a modest state school in the UK. The stupid thing was, there was nothing wrong with the exit door, it's window was smashed. But it >

So just brace yourself for it. Got it.
dunno where the source video goes, but if you feel the crowd falling over, get your knees to your chest, use arms to protect your head.
TheGhostOfFutureDisappointments
As being caught in a crush is one of my fears, this is really good information to know.
SirDistic
That stance will not save you if 450 people are pushing against you. Nothing will.
pierceeze
The arms up, legs staggered is what I do at metal shows when a pit starts by me out of nowhere. Slowly back out or simply brace like that.
joot
In a real crush there’s not a whole room of space around you and it’s not going to fucking matter how you stand - there’s no space.
philmoregraves
Some of yall never survived in a massive mosh pit, and it shows
Lulabel73
I was in an overcrowded concert (1980s) and it was very strange. The crowd was like a wave and people would just fall over.

Years of mosh pits have taught me that same thing

*How to survive Black Friday

How? Stay home. But actually, Black Friday is dead. Not even a busy day in the store these days.

Also if a crowd is starting to surge forward try to move sideways if you can.
AGiantSlor
You learn this stance in heavy metal crowds. So many years of being on the edge of a mosh pit.
arewenotkingsandqueenstogether
Yeah I lock my arms in front of me, palming my fist. Not the pit so much as the crush, the pit has air
Yeah most times I'll jump into the pit to relax. Just go with the flow and mosh defensively.
hell yeah. Or in the middle of a mosh pit. Or at the front. Front is best.

Sad thing is something similar happened in Hong Kong in '93, but people forgot that packed crowds on steep inclines is a bad combination.

It's arguably worse. Police herded crowd in Itaewon for +5yrs, but someone high up decided to cancel it this year & people immediately died.

I believe the cop committed suicide over that decision as well.
The one who committed suicide was a mid-rank official in chain of command; more of a clerk who filed the order rather than make the order.
