TIL about a “snail bucket”

May 8, 2022 6:35 PM

The snail bucket (snigelhink in Swedish) was used for …snails.

The bucket hanged from the side of the wagon and was used to lubricant the wheels during trips to reduce friction and noises. Apparently mashed up snails was a great lubricant. I cannot unlearn this.

Snail bucket from around 1700-1800s.
Sometimes tar was used instead …but the buckets aren’t called tar buckets

Another Snail bucket (right) and his buddy (unknown usage) from the 1800s

I can see that. I picked up a slug today and it took a good 3-4 minutes to wash the goo off my fingers
