TIL...

The songwriting team of Blane and Martin wrote the song for the film at the request of studio executives for Garland, but the original version (salvaged from a melody they had thrown away for being too difficult to set lyrics for) was quite depressing. I'll nclude the lyrics here:
Have yourself a merry little Christmas.
It may be your last.
Next year we may all be living in the past.
Have yourself a merry little Christmas.
Pop that champagne cork.
Next year we may all be living in New York.
No good times like the olden days.
Happy golden days of yore.
Faithful friends who were dear to us.
Will be near to us no more.
But at least we all will be together.
If the Lord allows.
From now on, we'll have to muddle through somehow.
So have yourself a merry little Christmas now.
Garland refused to record the sad version, so we get the popular one from every Christmas season since. A few artists have recorded it in their own styles (a recent release by a singer/songwriter named Egg is pretty decent and on Spotify to check out).
Just a little bit of non-selfie Christmas knowledge for your day.
Dovie'andi se tovya sagain,
-The Librarian.

The sad version blows.

I wonder if these lyrics were in response to the start of the Nuclear age? Either way, Merry Christmas!

Perfect post for Imgur. I salute you. Also, Glædelig Jul as they say where I live.

I’d like to add that Garland’s objection was to singing it on set to her very young costar, Margaret O’Brien.
