Read “The Rise and Fall of the Dinosaurs” by Steve Brusatte. It has a really cool chapter on the asteroid impact and extinction!

It was most likely a combination of multiple factors that lead to dinos extinct. the impact was a catalyst and/or contributing factor.

Oh the planet doesn't need that, it will be fine even if we ruin it. May take a million years, but it will come back. Just we wont.
