This shot as they power up the Death Star in A New Hope is of a video mixing board. That lever is what they would use to control e.g. the kind of sweep effects that Star Wars uses for scene transitions.

or a salt shaker to scan vital signs....

7 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well, yeah. I mean besides the fact people would look at that at the time and think it was futuristic, there is also the fact that prop makers are really good at reusing anything they can, even broken junk and disgarded electronics.

All the better to find the nuclear wessels.

Same principle as using a DDR pad to beat Elden Ring.

The guards on Mars in Total Real has Casio FX-82 calculators on their arms.

If you're checking, it's just after, "Get ready for a surprise!"

Chekov was the navigator, not the helmsman. Sulu drove.

Dr. McCoy's medical instruments on TOS were salt and pepper shakers from the Paramount studio commissary.

7 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Chekhov keeps leaving his gun around too.

It’s always worth looking out for the Swedish salt and pepper shakers repurposed as medical equipment in Bones sick bay

Honestly, better than the overly CGI stuff that is in so many movies

You don't need dilithium crystals to power that warp drive, all you need is a sick beat!

Or like in Contact when she uses an Eventide Harmonizer to find aliens.

Not the weirdest thing it can do.

7 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I could actually understand this in this setting. If you're trying to hear something obscured by static, bending pitch/timing might help.

7 months ago | Likes 38 Dislikes 0

It's professional audio equipment being used for its intended purpose, which is not just music production. I've been in several control rooms that are used for the same purpose as those depicted in the film and they have tons of Eventide, Focusrite, BSS, Lexicon, Levinson, and Neve hardware. It's the best stuff in the world, but probably not as good as what the aliens are using.

And a focusrite compressor

Yup, a Red 3 and pair of ADAT's. Not sure what the other rack unit is.

I love most trek, and while into darkness had its issues, I thought beyond was a cracking film, and the Sabotage scene is one of my favourites.

Star Trek 13, forgot her name though. She baits the Enterprise to a planet where it gets destroyed and the crew stranded and captured by some evil dude.

7 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 5

Nag, that's Jayla, her ship was destroyed by the bad people and she was stranded on the bad persons planet

7 months ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

wait, but wasnt she forced by them to bait the Enterprise to the planet too? Haven't watch the movies in years so I don't know exactly anymore

7 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Nah that was a different individual

7 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Looks like Jaylah from Star Trek.

Its a cosplay fa-sure. A good one but not the actress.

Could never get over the POS scanners glued to the console. Literally the exact same model from when I worked retail in the early 2000s.

Scanners set to save!

7 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Oh, point of sale. I read that as PIECE OF SHIT scanners, thinking there was some Trek rage I was unaware of.

7 months ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Those Chris Pine movies didn't feel very Star Trek, but they were pretty fun movies I guess.

If you hate them: I feel like that's a pretty good indicator you're too uptight and you should chill out

7 months ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 2

I enjoyed them. I even enjoy the sw prequels. If you don't analyze it too closely and expect it to be amazing like the originals, you'll be disappointed. Alot of the animosity comes from og fans wanting to relive what they fell in love with, but all new and fresh. Times change and so do tastes. That's why there will never be another BttF.

7 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Counterpoint: The first one was fun; the second one was Wrath of Khan × 9/11, pretty joyless

7 months ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

They picked back up with the third one though.

the only thing I really hated about them was the crazy bright bridge with all the lens flare - how could anyone work there?

7 months ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Was that the one that happened during the writer's strike? I agree the first one was fun even though it wasn't really Star Trek, but the next one just fell flat, due to (IMO) bad writing/storytelling. I didn't even watch the third, I'd lost interest in this timeline by then.

7 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

The third is a fun action movie that happens to have Starfleet uniforms. If you wanna watch Star Trek, you'll be disappointed. If you wanna watch SHIT BLOWS UP!?!11!1, then it's great. And it actually has a decent enough plot that is *not* just a rewrite of another Trek movie. But since it's the Pine alternate timeline it's not good old Star Trek, and it's *very* not TOS. Maaaaybe a DS9 adjacent reality.

7 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thanks, that confirms me in not watching it. I'm not into action and things blowing up, even DS9 got dull for me when it was all about the war. It's fine once in awhile, but I need the focus to be sci-fi, exploring ideas and humanity and life itself. TNG was so goddamn good at that, that's still my fave. The further from that they go, the less I like it.

7 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I couldn't enjoy the second one as much because of the whole wrath of Khan thing. Like, it was pretty obvious that that was what they were doing, and they did it in a less sensible way that had no emotional connection to the audience it worked a lot less for me.

I've seen the third one three times now and I find it fun and forgettable and I'll probably watch it again

7 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I mean, they are the Star Trek movies you get when a guy who does not like Star Trek is hired to make Star Trek.

7 months ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

Couldn't have said it better myself. This is exactly my feeling

7 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Is that why the third one hit the mark better?

7 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Maybe? Just know JarJarAbrams went on record before the first one came out that he did not like Star Trek. Which is why the first one was basically just Star Wars wearing a Star Trek uniform. His attempt to get to make Star Wars movies, I guess, which, it seems, worked out for him. Much to many a fans' disgust... of both franchises.
