I went to school with someone who had that phone number. Needless to say, he was not amused by all the people calling his house looking for Jamming Jenny.
A McDonald's with a playground area? Wow, that's like a twist ending. Now I'm imagining that the story takes place in 1981, and he's the first person in town to hear that song.
I used to work with a guy who used to give this number out whenever anyone asked for anyone's contact number. It was almost like a tic or a compulsion, he didn't seem to be able to stop himself. Sometimes he'd try to switch up the cadence or the phrasing to disguise it (area code XXX, 867, fifty-three, zero nine) but he still gave Jenny's number every time.
I get the joke (brilliant) but my friend over here does not and I am not sure how to explain. Would someone please eli5 for the sake of a friend. I'll be honest, it's me. I don't get the joke. I just want to understand.
(goes into bathroom... sees people have written ph #'s on the stall for prostitutes, hookups, etc. One says "For a good time call Jenny 867-5309". Decides to write song about it.)
Shit, my mother in law and I were talking about that this weekend. Because her name is Jeanne (Jenny, just french), and her number was 8675309 in a small town in Ontario. She was 15 when the song came out and would get calls ALL hours, from all over the world. It was crazy.
Dude, the other day at work during a conversation the phrase “just like Ronnie said” came up to which I naturally replied “be my little baby” which fell flat. Then I discover that these children don’t even know who Eddie Money is. Eddie FUCKING Money. I felt incredibly old.
I was going to say that makes no sense for them not to release in Britain, but then I remembered they have a completely different phone number format. Carry on.
Yes, they do now but it seemed like they were saying area codes (which make ten digit phone numbers) weren't a thing at that point. From what I see though, that system started in 1947 and commonplace by 1960 so I am confused....
Before cell phones blew up the total number of phone numbers needed, area codes always had a 0 or 1 as the middle digit, and exchanges (the 2nd 3 digits) never did. Cell phones made the available area codes run out, so now the system needs 10 digits to understand who you're calling.

LPT: your local area code + 867-5309 is likely already registered for every rewards card out there. Just punch in the number and get the discount.

Referencing. Referring to. Pick one.

Do you not reference the materials you're referring to?

You referernce them, or you refer to them. You do not “reference to” them. Hence “pick one.”

American phone numbers are 7 digits long. These was a song by a band in the 1980's called 867-5309 Jenny.
RunawaySpoons
I enjoy the variety of responses but yours is definitely the most informative, thank you!
TalaayaCosplay
I'm sure you're aware but to clarify for anyone else: they're 10 digits now but were only 7 digits in the 80s.
OmnipotentBeing
I meant without the area code. Yes with the area code it is 10 digits.
itsallaboutthecones
Wait, seriously? Wouldn't that allow for only 9 million phone numbers?
OmnipotentBeing
Area codes exist as well >> (###)<< ###-####

Yes, they do now but it seemed like they were saying area codes (which make ten digit phone numbers) weren't a thing at that point. From what I see though, that system started in 1947 and commonplace by 1960 so I am confused....
