I usually post silly things here, but I have a serious question today. I have a problem with this Dremel MM40 multi-tool. Any clamped-in attachments vibrate off within seconds of turning on the motor. Clearly the clamp is not holding the attachments in place. They wiggle loose. I cannot find a YouTube video that addresses the specifically nor another source that offers an explanation. The center pin that should anchor the clamping flange doesn’t stay in place; it moves in and out so readily that I can pull it with my fingers. If that truly locked into place when that Quick Lock arm swung into place that raises and lowers the pin was in position, the attachments would stay in place.

Is anybody more familiar with the brand than I — and can offer a suggestion or link to a video that might help? Not you, Rick Astley.

Tips for requesting help on shit like this: a clean shot of the label with all its ID info. A clean shot of the whole device before failure.

That latch does look like it's positioned to the right, and the icon indicates that the locked position is to the left. Perhaps it's a mistake in the video and not an indication of the problem, but just making sure

I mean you should know your tool better than I but it looks like the clamping flange is set to unlock. https://www.dremel.com/storage/en-gn/dremel-multi-max-mm40-513-original-pdf-9367-en-gn.pdf

That quicklock thing looks to have a flip up D ring you can lift up, and spin to tension before flipping it down to clamp. It's small dark metal near the top on the on switch side. Going purely on visuals here though.

Is the attachment the same brand? Not all were interchangeable

Take a shot of the locking mechanism while you open/close the locking lever. From the brief view, it doesn't look like it's adding tension

I think you’re exactly right. That’s precisely the problem I want to fix. I don’t have it on me right now, but I can get to it in the next hour or so. I’ll follow up here. In the meanwhile, that arm on the top ahead of the blue power toggle is a swing lock. Swings off to the side to loosen the mechanism a bit, then back in place to lock it in place. Except that it’s letting that pin slip

When you get a chance, you might try removing the lever assembly and checking the inner workings. If that's the broken bit, it can be replaced for ~$17 + shipping

gotta fasten it better....

The machine has to fasten it better, agreed. The clamp is fully engaged. The clamp cannot clamp any harder. I’ve blown out the machine with compressed air and made sure there’s no sawdust or dirt clogging anything. There simply isn’t enough tension on that central pin to hold it in place.

need to replace the clamp then or reshape it so it can apply more pressure. you could also try replacing the blade to see if that blade is just worn out.

https://www.manualslib.com/manual/1999246/Dremel-Multi-Max-Mm20.html?page=3#manual do you click it in correctly?

The manual I can find. In fact, I have a hard copy. The problem is that it doesn’t address this particular issue and when I spoke to the manufacturer, their solution was to have me mail it to them, an expense I don’t relish for a tool that
wasn’t cheap but not a wallet-buster in the first place.

Still, we can't see you attaching the tool. From the manual it seems you have to slide it in at the right spot.
