True democracy pretty much never chooses fascism, unfortunately western democracy can be prone to corruption through unregulated capitalism. In the U.S. we had many safeguards against what is happening now.....and rich fucks spent like 70 years picking it all apart every way they could. This time around they've gotten smart enough to offer the illusion of choice - gerrymandering, Citizen's United, lobbying, etc. have made it that way. Democracy requires vigilance.

A lot of the people DID (and do) choose fascism. People can be manipulated, but it still comes down to votes. If we didn't like gerrymandering, we could have elected people who wanted to stop it. Bigotry and fascism are woven into the history of America. One thing you can't save democracy from is itself.

I honestly agree with the majority of what you said there, I suppose the difference to me is the manipulation. Fascism by its very nature requires that, I'd argue, so if it is a necessary component of fascism to manipulate certain groups to vote certain ways....is that really intrinsic to democracy, or fascism? But yeah there's plenty of fascist undertones (or outright) in our history unfortunately, but there's also a history of fascist manipulation. It's kind of a chicken/egg problem in a way.

It's also worth pointing out, fascism relies on predatory and unregulated capitalism. I think of it as the fascism gateway drug. Democracy has an inherent undertone of collectivism, in ways it's almost incongruent with unregulated (or poorly regulated) capitalism, because it's an inherently individualistic economic system. It creates a system where coercion and manipulation are the status quo for voting. Fascism needs that to exist, democracy does not, but we are pretty much there at this point.
