Enshittification incoming!

Go Linux. If you're new to this, I'd say try Kubuntu https://kubuntu.org/ - it'll be familiar and you should be up and running in no time. You can even just try it off a USB drive without committing to anything!

A friend just tried it on her old laptop and her first reaction was "wow, it's so fast again". It's really user friendly these days and in a lot of ways it's easier than Windows :)

Thanks for the advice of course. But I'm an old Linux follower. At work and at home, even on a laptop, there is Linux

8 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

Oh, well maybe advice for others reading then :)
Lucky you, only Linux at my job is in a VM

8 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

Why on VM?

8 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

We're forced to use Windows. Which I didn't mind before, but it's progressively gone to shit

Did something specific happen or just referring to M$ being shit as usual?

8 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Linux. I just switched recently.

I'm going to wait until valve releases steamOS for public consumption, I'm so ready to leave Microsoft in the dust

8 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

you are right

oh look, Onedrive is back and really wants my money..

8 months ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 3

True. And it's always more than one. And it always - ALWAYS - does something fucky to my HDMI connection which no longer works after **every fucking update**. I don't know what it is, it's a cheap POS Dell laptop that works absolutely fine all the time EXCEPT after a Windows update. Fuckers.

Followed by updates from every vendor my companies use…

It gave me no option but to download and update to windows 11, so I quickly filled the HD up. Now it just keeps trying a failing due to no space. I'm not going to win the war, but I'm hanging in there for now.

mine tells me im not compatible and to upgrade xD

8 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

you can edir the registry keys to force your comp to stay on one version.....

8 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

my cpu/mobo is too old and dont have TMP or whatever it's called so it just tells me my computer is too shit and i should get a better one so they can fuck me up.

8 months ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 3

They apparently did a rollback on this realizing too many people don't have it so now you'll update but have this weird watermark saying you're a scrub that doesn't have tmp.

And the bastards keep pushing AI too. We neither need nor want it.

8 months ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 1

At least not the way they are trying to force it down our throats. I have been using it quite a bit for work recently, and it's a great tool, but not every situation requires a hammer so to speak.

8 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Had the update break my toolbars today. It reset and resorted my start menu too. Yay :(

8 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Built my own computer, doesn't meet requirements to update to 11.

8 months ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 4

Just hang in there, they'll "revise" the requirements again. When they notice no one's upgrading.

Have fun getting your settings back!

Unneccessary and unwanted AI features, and additional surveillance.

i just built a new PC and put windows on it cause i don't know anything about linux. how badly did i just fuck up.

8 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They should rethink they stopping if support for Windows 10 in 2025 too.
Way too many people are not upgrading to Windows 11 because it is not trusted.

8 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

The worst part is lack of "Don't remind me until I HAVE to update" option.

8 months ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 2

I prefer the "fck off and leave me alone until the heat death of the universe" option.

Recently went full Linux. Zero regrets. Been over microsoft's garbage policies for a while. If they just put out a lightweight version that wouldn't spy I'd have been fine but literally every step they take is in the wrong direction.

Working in cyber security i can say that we actually prefer MacOS and Linux (as targets), usually its a bounch of people who think they know better while there are far less security mechanics in place for the OS:es. So its easy picking of high value targes (developers, infrastructure, IT etc).

The ONLY reason I have a Windows disk in my computer is so I can run Runescape! I shut down Ubuntu, boot up windows, and after it deigns to allow me to use it, I play my game for a while, and then drop it and go back to Linux land.

8 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Why? You can run Runescape on Linux natively or via Proton.

8 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Okay, I've heard of Proton, but I've been ADHDing a bunch of other things instead of working on that. Sadly, Linux may never be out-of-the-box ready for most folks. *I've* had to study up on it to even be able to sift out all the possible answers to a few problems/settings I find on the internet!
