Sometimes I'd really like an "I'm going straight" indicator. Instead of just having to assume the other driver forgot to hit their blinker and is about to turn right into me.
It's not particularly useful to the following car, they will have to wait for the U-turn driver to leave the path of the turn lane anyway. It makes more sense if it were in the front of the car so drivers across the intersection or to the driver's left can see.
U-turn, lane-merge, taking-next-exit, I've thought about putting things like this on my car... but I drive a cheap one and don't have money for such things. I have a lot of other innovation ideas. Imagine having a 2nd wire screen window for the doors. When it's hot out these automatically come up & your glass ones come down, so your car doesn't get too hot. They can reverse before it starts to rain. Or an engine that runs on gas, diesel & ethanol, you calc which will be cheapest $ per mile
I wonder if this is DOT approved design, because here in Taiwan we can't ever have nice things because the government is just ancient with adjusting regulations to progressions.
i don't know why we need indicators at all. y'all should be allowing enough space that it doesn't matter what other drivers do. if there's a good reason i've not found it?
no, I'm saying if people respected braking distances and reaction times, which is in thier own interest and they should be doing anyway, they wouldn't have to.
I don’t see any reason for this. I’m already behind the guy, and I’m not going to do anything different if I know he’s doing a U-turn versus a left turn
The same people that use the turn signal would use a U-turn one. Everyone else, I have a theoretic suggestion as to how improve their use: hire students that would fly small drones over traffic and ticket everyone that doesn't use them.
There's a problem with that suggestion, as in a case of emergency/accident avoidance, when split seconds matter, not being able to move before turning on signals could kill. So any way to make changes, would be changing the behaviours without setting technical limits.
I've wondered why there aren't different signals for "gonna turn" and "just switching lanes" and "I'm going straight ahead". It'd be a mess but it would clarify so much!
My vehicular dream are brake lights that burn brighter the harder the pedal is pressed so you can see how hard they're stomping and know that you, behind them, will need to respond in kind.
Well in the early 90s this wouldn't really be possible, in the mid 00s widely expensive and now it is just people don't want it and it's cheaper to not do it. Put it in a popular movie and it will catch on.
This is a matrix, so can show whatever signal you want, as needed. I agree that it's dumb that America lets brake lights, indicators and hazards all be the same light, but something like this would resolve that ambiguity.
So fucking often people are pulsing their brakes in a lane next to me where I can't see both lights and at first I think they're wanting to merge in front of me until I realize they just can't make up their mind about travel speed in traffic.
It's not for the follower. For the follower in a left-hand lane, it's obviously not relevant. This may shock you, but in complex intersections that include yielding rules, there are _other cars_ - cars other than the one we have the POV for here that may benefit from certainly about the vehicle's intention. Someone in the right-hand lane turning right in the oncoming lanes, for instance. If you can cast your mind that far.
Fwiw though the person turning right, unless they have a shielded right turn (ie: green turn arrow), is supposed to be yielding to that traffic anyways- and those turning left have the right of way in those instances. I mean im not going to sit and go "well itd be BAD!" - cuz hey, more info? sure. But as someone who drives 60-80~ K miles a year, predominantly in city traffic- It seems like a "solution" to a problem that doesnt exist. You dont regularly see accidents with that kind of situation.
I thought the discussion was about the one we could see. In any case, the manufacturer went through the effort of putting them on the rear, where they seem to be useless.
Yeah, so the indicator needs to be in a place where THOSE cars can see it, not on the rear bumper. The place that most comes to mind is left front bumper so people trying to make right-on-red can see it ( I live in a state where right on red is legal, not sure how common that is).

Imagine this picture blinking

You put one of these in cars and they're going to think this means they can U Turn *anywhere* they want.
Dodel1976
If it's like most drivers I come across, it'll be U-Turn then indicate.

I just want one that says "oops, my bad" and "thanks!"

That is just so bitchin'.

The incident report getting out of hands? So we added legendary indicators.

Then turn right just for fun.

Is there something similar on the front? The guy behind you isn’t really affected by the difference between a u-turn and a left turn.
RummageSaleBubbler
Alright. That's kind of great. Stronger innovation than the cyberdumpster.

Exactly, show us what it looks like from the front left side.

Ppl drive around with red headlights, and smoke out their brakelights, ffs! Nothing makes sense anymore.

WE can't even get people to use their turn signals...there's no way this would ever get used!

Dude, we can't even get people to use the handbrake when parked on a hill. Your hope for people following basic protocol is sadly misplaced.

That's illegal. Unless you are an LEO or are a sworn deputy or sheriff, you cannot issue citations.
TiredSnowball
You know laws can change, right? And photo speed radars exist. It could be in the same category: fine with no points if caught by drone.
Ghlargh
As someone suggested: Make a car that just won't make a turn onto another street if you didn't signal.

There's a problem with that suggestion, as in a case of emergency/accident avoidance, when split seconds matter, not being able to move before turning on signals could kill. So any way to make changes, would be changing the behaviours without setting technical limits.

Do american cars have turn signals yet or do they still use blinking brake lights of the same color for some godforsaken reason

But he is using it, right?

Why cut the video there !?!!!... at least give us 2 more seconds !!!!

U turns are usually illegal

I've been wondering the same thing for 30 seconds.
bvngholio
We do. It usually looks like someone flipping off the other driver turning right in front of the U-turner.
MrSpookywasagoodboy2
Culause its pointless. The guy behind you don't need to know if you turn left or u-turn

Are you American?

Needs to be in front too

Me too!!!

Half the places I've lived in the US don't allow U-turns except in specific situations, typically in a lane designated specifically for u-turns.
Knaxia
It's been on every BMW for decades. that's why you never saw it.
Erdanya
Because turn signals double as warning lights, and it literally sends the wrong signal if you have both on.

Wouldn't it be nice if brakes were octagonal stop-sigh shaped, and indicators were triangular arrow-shaped :)
RedCamaro
Americans wouldn't use it anyway
CaptainFubs
Correction. BMW and other luxury car owners wouldn't
PineappleLoopsBrOether
Why? ….. it’s not a roundabout indicator
bladderinfection
It’s just an extra long left turn. It’s not necessary information to convey. The person following should figure it out intuitively.
sumthinsumthinsumthin

A light on the back of the vehicle will not provide information at all to a driver in front of it.

It is reasonable to assume corresponding blinkers on the front.
