Unsolicted deck pic (OC)

I wanted to show you guys my big deck. I made it on the creekside on my home yard this summer. It's 5 x 6 m in size with two meters part hanging over water.

So, we bought a house on the side of a creek last year. The water of the creek is quite dark, but we do kayaking on it. This place felt like it would be nice to have a deck standing in the middle of it. I started by trimming some bushes to make the deck stand out a bit better.

On first autumn, I installed some steel screw posts inside the soil. I made also some sad excuse of concrete pour around those that needed improving after the first winter. These wooden pillars are laying on top of the steel posts.

Screw posts were installed to the other end of the pillars, too. Here, the ground is still frozen so installation had to wait.

The frame is made from old telephone poles. I aligned them with help of longer planks and cut the pillars to proper length.

Pillars cut and screw poles installed to the other end, too.

Poles cut to equal length, and one pole was extended with 2x4" 's. Support beam for counter weights installed on top of the steel pillars.

2 x 4" 's installed on the poles.

Torsional support installed between the front pillars. Started the concrete pour.

I made a chute for pouring concrete. Proved to work out pretty nicely.

About a metric shitton of concrete was poured between the supporting poles. The pour is protected with steel sheets from ice during winter.

Added counterweights, 900 kg's of steel. The deck has a 2-m overhang over the water, so the counterweight is for ensuring that the deck stays down in all possible scenarios.

My deck starts to look nice and firm.

Installing the handrails. The posts are attached to the frame from at least two sides for stability.

Made an additional storage space for kayaks under the deck.

Top parts of handrails installed, continuing the floor work.

Floor part done.

Installing additional rails. Vili comes to inspect the built quality.

Spilled some morning coffee on my deck.

Making some stairs and bridge to the deck. Had to dig a lot of soil to be able to sink the stairs inside the ground.

Progressing.

Still missing some handrails and side planks.

Handrails done. Quite annoying thing to install due to metric shitton of different angles.

Made a small floating pier for easier use of kayaks.

The pier is connected to the deck with hinges to enable movement. Kayaks can be stored under the deck.

All done. Thanks for having a look on my deck.

Damn good stuff, sir. Are the front poles standing on the screw poles?

Thanks! Yes, the front poles are attached to steel poles. The steel poles are cast inside the concrete pour.

Is that an average size, I mean without any shrubs it looks a bit larger

I’d love to live in a house on a lake. Sadly landlocked and space is a premium in my city

#18 hope the site inspector approved it all!

You know what they say a metric deck gets them wet!

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

6 m ≈ 20 feet

I see you really put in the effort to make your deck real stiff.

That's a nice deck. Why did you choose girth over additional length?

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Additional length tends to make decks slightly more wobbly and harder to keep solid

I knew there had to be a reason.

That is a thing of beauty my friend. If you've got some free time, I need my decking rebuilt here in Finland?

Thanks! I'm afraid my daily job prevents additional projects outside my home.

Worth asking 😊
