Upgrading the lighting in a china cabinet to display my books better

Nov 18, 2024 7:31 PM

My wife and I recently acquired this china cabinet from my in-laws. We don't have any nice china, but we do have books. The two tiny little lights embedded at the top weren't nearly enough to light the books up though, so I decided to upgrade.

The upgraded lighting will use WS2812B addressable LEDs with a Raspberry Pi Pico W running ESPHome for the controller. That Pi itself is managed by my Home Assistant instance.

These are just demo colors. I may do other colors/effects later. This video was taken before the diffusing film was added inside. The strips of light you see there are less pronounced now.

Original light. These were LEDs powered by 24v DC, and it took me a while to figure out they turned on and off by touching one of the door hinges. I thought it would be fun to stick with that theme.

I measured and strung together several strips of addressable LEDs (WS2812B) for lighting.

These strips are stuck on the back side of the front trim. The extra wires you see run to each of the outside hinges to enable capacitive touch response.

The original lights were little can-lights with a single LED. I wanted to keep the fixtures, but upgrade them.

Inside the lights.

I replaced the single LED with a circular arrangement of more addressable LEDs.

I then added a layer of diffusing film to soften the light a bit more. I also added strips of this film onto all of the LED strips I installed.

Forgive the mess. This was taken before final cleanup.

Much better!
