Also sometimes cats can perforate the air sacks and then the poor bird just accumulates air under their skin, inflating like a balloon. Must hurt like crazy

Yeah, it only takes an extremely small, often invisible wound for the bacteria to enter the bloodstream and then it's game over. Even with urgent treatment the survival rate is not amazing.

My husband was bitten (holding the cat above his head to save it from marauding dogs). Six hours later he was delirious and fevered. Two days of IV antibiotics later he was OK.
