We’ve been refining the movement system in Voivod: The Nuclear Warrior. Here’s a quick before/after showing the updated run and jump animations. Do you think it improved?
I agree with the others. The jump is much better and overall the running is an improvement. The shoulders really add to it but the head movement is a wash- it’s like the back of the head isn’t moving with the front so the motion is a little discordant. Maybe adding a little movement to the back of the head would help? Idk. The gun movement is no good. I’m no animator but maybe just a little up and down on the gun instead of trying to make it look like z-axis motion?
Oh also in some running frames it looks like his right knee pad still has a spike and in some frames it doesn’t. You have to really be looking to notice so it’s not that big of a deal but if you’re already in there making tweaks you might want to clean it up a bit.
Where did you learn animation and what program do you use? It looks really cool!
I’m not trying to bombard you- I’m just drinking my coffee and getting started on my day- and I can see the passion you’re putting into it so it’s inspiring me to try and be helpful.
I looked into some other ‘running with a rifle’ pixel art animations and I think the difference is that some of other characters’ heads have a little bob motion that’s independent of the body.
If you google ‘running with a rifle animation gif’ you can see what I’m talking about.

I see the upgrade in the update though personally I prefere the simpler running animation. For jumping though I like the new version more.

Turrican was a source of inspiration.

Agreed. But I think the running would be better with most of the second one, just less/no head movement

Agreed... I like the more steady gun a bit more but it's the head/face that I dislike in the new version.
CyberOctopuses
Is it due to the head, weapon? or both? I think shoulders are better in the updated running animation.

Shoulders I agree are better. Weapon gets a bit blurry at the tip in my opinion and the face gets muddy/blurry due to the movement.

Again- really awesome stuff!

Shoulders are good. Weapon looks a little off for sure, maybe a little less sway for the gun? Head I'm not sure if it's better or not.

Thanks. I'll consider.
