"It's a complex and strange operation, but it basically involves replacing the cornea," said Moloney.

He said the surgery begins by removing a tooth from the patient's mouth. The tooth is then implanted into their cheek for several month, until it is encompassed in strong connective tissue.

Both the tooth and connective tissue are then removed, and a plastic focusing telescope or lens is inserted into it. Using the connective tissue as an anchor, the tooth and new lens are sutured into the patient's eye socket.

"We need a structure that is strong enough to hold onto the plastic focusing telescope, but is not going to be rejected by the body," Moloney explained.

Okay there’s an animation of how this works out there, and it’s the creepiest thing ever. hahaha But still science is incredibly cool!

That’s amazing but it looks pretty gruesome… but worth it

Wait I thought the only way we had innovation was because of our high healthcare cost.

Well when I read the title what popped into my head was different... I was thinking some kind of camera as a tooth replacement. This is so much worse

Oh, I need to watch that again! (I'm currently going through all my DVDs and revisiting ones that I haven't watched in a long while.)

If the 1st surgery of this kind was done in the 60s, why is it just news now?

2 weeks ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

It is just a rare surgery. I remember seeing a story about it years ago (I think around 2010ish), but it is currently in the news because this is the first time a Canadian doctor has done the procedure, and they did multiple patients in the same time period.

I gotta be real with you guys. Ill just take being blind over the nightmare fuel that is this.

While I think it’s awesome we’re able to restore sight, I think people might freak out when seeing the ‘eye’ actually.
Freaked me out a little…

Incredible technology, but the eye looks horrific. I'm sorry but my eyes would water if I had to look at someone with that.

2 weeks ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

You think that, but I'm sure you'd get used to it if it was someone you regularly encountered. It's amazing what differences we can get used to and even stop noticing once they become normalised in our lives and minds.

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'd certainly accept them without question, but it would be like seeing someone with just the worst eye infection imaginable. My eyes water involuntarily if I even see someone with a burst blood vessel in the eye. I wouldn't be able to make eye contact.

Incredible! Science is - or should I say, scientists are - absolutely amazing.

Extra info: "It's specifically meant for people with severe corneal blindness in the front of the eyes caused by conjunctival scarring from autoimmune diseases, chemical burns and other traumas, but who still have healthy retina and optic nerves in the back of their eyes." https://www.cbc.ca/radio/asithappens/tooth-in-eye-surgery-canada-1.7470626

Wonder if she still needs to brush it

2 weeks ago | Likes 70 Dislikes 2

Yeah, just use an eye liner brush.

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's not coming into contact with all the bacteria and other wildlife of the mouth so no :) just like a tooth sitting in a box doesn't decay

2 weeks ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

It's also coated (not quite the right word, but hopefully you know what I mean) in connective tissue, so there's no exposed enamel surface to brush anyway.

You’d be surprised to find certain ailments are treated by putting “healthy” poop into a patient’s butt. Humans have weird, fragile bodies

2 weeks ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

I remember reading about fecal transplants years ago but iirc they don't put it in your butt. They put a tube down your throat to insert it directly into your digestive tract. The purpose is to replace an unhealthy gut biome with a healthy one.

I gotta admit, I just watches Sandman all the way through and didn't even think of the Corinthian. Well done.

2 weeks ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

I've not seen it, but I've read it.

2 weeks ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

The show is fairly decent. A good adaptation, I believe. In particular I think the casting choices for Dream and Death were spot on, and The Corinthian and Desire are pretty good too.
