What is this and can I get rid of it without murdering everything inside?

It's like the size of a baseball

wasps

Sorry for your loss, but the only way to be sure is to take off and nuke the entire site from orbit

If you're going to move it, do it during the day. If you want to spray them, do it at dusk.

Paper wasp, and from the looks of it, it's empty right now. In the winter, the workers die off and the fertile females are hibernating. In the spring, those females will build hives of their own. In other words, if you're in the northern hemisphere, you don't have to worry about killing anything or getting stung right now.

Thats a big nope. They get territorial and will sting. Knock it down if it's where you go frequently enough. I leave the tree ones alone but remove the ones where I am going to be around.

that wasp nest is defunct. no trouble discarding it. Wasps don't reuse nests.

I don’t know about not murdering everything in it, but there is an easy way to get rid of them that my dad taught me: get up early (really early before the wasps get up) and take a mason jar and stick it over the nest. Then, take the lid from the mason jar and slide it over the opening and the nest will fall into the jar. Seal the jar closed. Anything in the jar will asphyxiate and anyone out of the jar will come back home to find the hive gone.

Wasp nest. Try moving it, they will take it personally.

it's a wasp nest

Paper wasp. They chew on dry exposed wood and make their brood nest under protected rafters. Mostly harmless.

Kill it preferably fire

I recommend murder. Use fire.

Hmmm. Should I leave them be then? We use the garage regularly. If they're gonna start shit I would like to pre-empt that

Yes, always tear the old ones down. Usually, some will come back to check and then typically build another right next to it

It looks like an abandoned nest given the size. By all means, get rid of it. Even if there was one active wasp, they can build their nest anew somewhere else.

If you move it while they are there, they will attack you. If you waited until night, you could put a plastic bag around the entire thing, with wasps, cut it loose. Then tie it up somewhere else and wait a few minutes, remove the bag. That way, when they wake up, they will orient around the new nest location.

They won't though. They will have formed a mental pattern of where they were previously located. When they leave the new location, they will go back to the old location looking for their nest. Even though they left their nest in a new location, they won't find their way back to it. They're not intelligent creatures. They run on a very inflexible program.

"The wasps themselves orient based on the details around the nest, so if you move it while they are gone (usually, if all are gone, it’s been abandoned already), they won’t know where to look for it. If you move it while they are there, they will attack you. ..."
