If I had a nickel for everytime someone sent a PM asking why I commented GNU on a Pratchett post I'd have two nickles.
Which isn't a lot of money but it's weird it happened twice.

It's not Unix
LadyVimes
It's right in the name!
Pattosaurus20xx
I wonder if that would feel really grim at first, repeating dead men's names every day, or if you just got used to it.
LadyVimes
Maybe a little. But grim like Ground Zero in New York and the names there. People still go.

How are the dragons?
LadyVimes
Smelly!

Terry Pratchett was an irreplaceable genius. I just finished re-reading Jingo and started Unseen Academicals again. All soo good!
LadyVimes
I really see the difference in everything from Monstrous Regiment on, but UU is one of the absolute best later books.

I even own a cat who thinks he's a dragon and smells like sulfur and brimstone. And his sister is Esme Weatherwax.

It ith good to be thomewhat relevant, you grace.
LadyVimes
I feel like it would be helpful to have an Igor around. But not one who fakes the lisp.

I believe the code also means, "Don't log the message," presumably so the damn company won't know about it.
LadyVimes
Oh, I'm not sure I knew that. If I did, I had forgotten! Thank you, I love new facts.
LadyVimes
I must have read it and not stored it.
Pavloval
I'm gonna show off since my book is handy: G means sent it on, N means Not Logged, U means turn around at the end of the line (U turn?).

Wonderful, though I imagine after a few rotations you’d basically be constantly clacking dead people’s names
LadyVimes
Technology can move fast on the Discworld. The clacks are relatively (for a magic world) newish, and might be replaced within due time.
LadyVimes
It only came up once in the book where it's explained, so maybe not as common as you think. And maybe it doesn't count if say, you get old
LadyVimes
And retire in the countryside. Only if you die in service, so to speak.
AMBM2
Ah. I’ve read a bunch of his books but never heard of the clacks. Internet says It’s from going postal, so I’ll have to read that to know
