This kills the mouse.

From losing its tail?

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 11

Yes, actually. Severe nerve damage.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

According to google they can survive it. Also, I'm down voted for not having that kind of information in my brain already. Wtf

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

don't worry about them... I'm thinking the spinning and occasional banging of the rat's head into the feed bucket/ waterer might have also been not great for the rat either.

I'm always surprised at horses killing little animals (and sometimes other horses) because they always seem so gentle. I figured someone who had horses could talk about horse behavior and maybe explain if this happens often? Or never? I've rarely been around them and just don't know

For some reason, I find it more horrifying when a horse eats a live animal. And it has to do with their teeth. I think because their flat and not sharp/fang-like.

That's why I found Attack on Titan terrifying at times.

In that case it's like a fruit gusher.

1 year ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

saw one where a baby chicken got eaten alive by a horse that was following it.

1 year ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

Yeah. Saw that too. Had same reaction.

1 year ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

yeah, very disturbing. another disturbing video that's been on here before is the woodpecker that pecks into the baby birds brain - while its still alive, eats some of the brain. apparently the chick survived.

Most farm animals are usually dicks but can you blame them

1 year ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Major lack of enrichment, this gave them something to do/play with.

1 year ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

I've seen horses do some messed up stuff to other animals out of spite. Like barnyard bullies

1 year ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

You spin me rat 'round, baby. Rat 'round, like a rodent, baby. Rat 'round, 'round, 'round.

mouse, probably.

OMG i did not expect its tail to come off.... thats part of its spine !!!!!

1 year ago | Likes 184 Dislikes 1

It's more like the skin around it - the part where it ripped off will dry and fall off. If that thing is still alive it will be fine - least not die from THAT. (I once had a rat that caught its tail in a gap and ripped off the skin)

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 11

Aaaahh that scene with Annie!

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It looked like that, but at the very end, you can see it's body in the horse's mouth.

That's more protecting the flock from the invader. Rats love to come after the eggs, so they're definitely ones they would want to discourage. Rooster spurs are no joke, personal experience.

Herbivores sometimes eat meat, both in the wild and in captivity. I learned that here I think with a horse eating a baby chicken gif. Monch.

1 year ago | Likes 326 Dislikes 3

It's only when really hungry though, that chick being eaten one was a starving thin horse for sure.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 9

That, per what I recall of what I'd learned looking this phenomenon up, is unsupported by the data available.

1 year ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Also someone posted the horse gif in replies, it doesn't look all that thin to me.

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Can confirm, that is a properly fed horse. Horses are just dicks and most people don't realise it.

Deer will eat off of carcasses in the wild for sure

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Like cats eating grass and horses eating chicks. Herbivore/carnivore is not an absolute and animals will cross that line when they want to. The total just means what side they generally prefer to be on or where they need to return to eventually.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Opportunistic feeding is the norm in nature. Pure herbivores are rare to non-existent, same with pure carnivores. In an environment of scarcity, which is what nature is on the whole, evolution rarely leads to picky eaters.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Herbivore, Carnivore, these terms are not absolutes in nature. I saw a deer eat a bird once (video). From what I've read, one of the only animals out there that is near %100 on its diet in the wild are vultures, which I guess are technically carrion carnivorous (scavengers).

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Pretty sure that's a mouse or a rat

11 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah this was an earlier occasion with a different gif. It's been posted in replies here if you're interested.

Aaahh I understand now yes thank you!

But he's not eating, he's playing

Teaching it a lesson for stealing its oats

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I've seen horses and mules kill ground squirrels for what I can only assume is fun. They catch them or stomp them, toss them, kick them but I've never seen any of them eat one. I'm not disputing that they can and might eat them just pointing out that sometimes they're just dicks to be dicks.

1 year ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Playing with his food.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

He's shaking it up so it's disoriented and then easier to eat. Because a rat will fight the entire time and he doesn't want to get bit and scratched... So he is shaking it and then going to chomp it up

1 year ago | Likes 41 Dislikes 2

Damn, that makes sense 😃

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Which is also why you should *never* give live rats to pet reptiles. They *will* fight back, and can seriously injure the pets.

1 year ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

How…um, how do you know about eating rats?

1 year ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Times are tough and getting tougher. Plan for the future.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

He's probably the horse in the vid

1 year ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

1 year ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

It's not about eating rats per se but keeping your prey from biting your sensitive nostrils. The horse surely learnt it the hard way and was bitten before from his soon to be Snack. (Humans do the same to avoid being bitten by snakes).
