don't worry about them... I'm thinking the spinning and occasional banging of the rat's head into the feed bucket/ waterer might have also been not great for the rat either.
I'm always surprised at horses killing little animals (and sometimes other horses) because they always seem so gentle. I figured someone who had horses could talk about horse behavior and maybe explain if this happens often? Or never? I've rarely been around them and just don't know
For some reason, I find it more horrifying when a horse eats a live animal. And it has to do with their teeth. I think because their flat and not sharp/fang-like.
yeah, very disturbing. another disturbing video that's been on here before is the woodpecker that pecks into the baby birds brain - while its still alive, eats some of the brain. apparently the chick survived.
It's more like the skin around it - the part where it ripped off will dry and fall off. If that thing is still alive it will be fine - least not die from THAT. (I once had a rat that caught its tail in a gap and ripped off the skin)
That's more protecting the flock from the invader. Rats love to come after the eggs, so they're definitely ones they would want to discourage. Rooster spurs are no joke, personal experience.
Like cats eating grass and horses eating chicks. Herbivore/carnivore is not an absolute and animals will cross that line when they want to. The total just means what side they generally prefer to be on or where they need to return to eventually.
Opportunistic feeding is the norm in nature. Pure herbivores are rare to non-existent, same with pure carnivores. In an environment of scarcity, which is what nature is on the whole, evolution rarely leads to picky eaters.
Herbivore, Carnivore, these terms are not absolutes in nature. I saw a deer eat a bird once (video). From what I've read, one of the only animals out there that is near %100 on its diet in the wild are vultures, which I guess are technically carrion carnivorous (scavengers).
I've seen horses and mules kill ground squirrels for what I can only assume is fun. They catch them or stomp them, toss them, kick them but I've never seen any of them eat one. I'm not disputing that they can and might eat them just pointing out that sometimes they're just dicks to be dicks.
He's shaking it up so it's disoriented and then easier to eat. Because a rat will fight the entire time and he doesn't want to get bit and scratched... So he is shaking it and then going to chomp it up
It's not about eating rats per se but keeping your prey from biting your sensitive nostrils. The horse surely learnt it the hard way and was bitten before from his soon to be Snack. (Humans do the same to avoid being bitten by snakes).

HeyOP
Herbivores sometimes eat meat, both in the wild and in captivity. I learned that here I think with a horse eating a baby chicken gif. Monch.
WooNeat
It's only when really hungry though, that chick being eaten one was a starving thin horse for sure.
HeyOP
That, per what I recall of what I'd learned looking this phenomenon up, is unsupported by the data available.
HeyOP
Also someone posted the horse gif in replies, it doesn't look all that thin to me.
CheeseIsNaturesFudge
Can confirm, that is a properly fed horse. Horses are just dicks and most people don't realise it.

Which is also why you should *never* give live rats to pet reptiles. They *will* fight back, and can seriously injure the pets.
