What to Roll and Add in DND

I have been teaching a lot of new players lately, so I made a simple flowchart they can refer to when figuring out how they are supposed to roll. I know there are some exceptions to the above statements, but this is meant to be broadly applicable, so it ignores how, say, a Hexblade warlock might use their Charisma mod for melee attacks instead of their Dexterity or Strength modifiers.

I built a great one off session called Tower of Ash. Players are transported to the top of a tower that catches fire and burns from the top down. Players can either run out and skip the loot and XP or risk searching the floors and dying. Players have 5 min per floor with a little 5min hour glass I turn per floor. Really helps cooperation and speeds the game up.

Or … you can do what I do, and ask the DM “what do I roll?” Every … Single … Time … 😈
