Fun fact, I learned about this movie when I was buying something off of facebook marketplace in glenview IL. The guy told me they filmed a scene from Midnight Run in his house. Sure enough, they did.

$1000 bills were never legal tender for civilian use. $1000 & $5000 bills were used to do transfers between financial institutions before electronic funds.

While they were intended for bank transfers, it's not "illegal" for regular civilians to own and use them. He was a mob accountant that embezzled millions, so may have had access due to facilitating bank transfers. Also, it's just a movie, you should really just relax.

I am relaxed. I was making an observation. Clearly, it's just a movie, he probably had the hook ups for that kind of cash in that scenario for sure.
But yes it is not illegal to own a $1000 bill. You're right. If you try to use it as legal money at a bank though, they are required to take it from you due to it not being legal for circulation.

I was paraphrasing the theme for MST3K. And just to clarify, when the bank "takes it from you," they're going to exchange it for an equivalent amount in other bills, like say ten $100 bills. Also, while banks are required to return the $1000 to the US Treasury, that's not the same as "not legal for circulation." Private citizens can still legally circulate the bills.
