Don’t get me wrong it’s amazing that we’ve harnessed the power of splitting the atom. But fiction set up all these expectations growing up. Gamma Radiation can turn people into hulking green super powered monsters. Radioactive waste can give you superpowers. That radioactive ooze can turn normal turtles into mutant humanoid ninjas. Lies, all of it. It just gives you cancer. Kind of glad the Godzilla thing didn’t work either though.

They are also absolutely 100% incapable of exploding like a nuclear bomb.

To be fair, the amazing part is controlling the reaction to regulate heat

Radiation does create superpowered mutant... vegetables. https://www.nytimes.com/2007/08/28/science/28crop.html

People scared of GMO's, not realizing thousands of crops were bred via radiation. Ruby Red Grapefruit is a cool story to look up.

There are ways to generate electricity directly from radiation. Plutonium used to power deep space probes.
Sulexar
Plutonium is basically magic.
iggylights
Thorium would do this much more efficiently on earth with no waste and little danger. A backyard reactor could power a whole neighborhood

Heh.. Probes

You found out that a crazy awesome science thingy is understandable to you, and you're disappointed? The fuck?
SmokyDoggg
I’ve understood it since I was 13 because I used to read up on it (this is before Google when you had to go to your public library) but it’s
SmokyDoggg
always been a funny observation to me.
TheUnstoppableWampas
fair enough.
