True story: I once designed a gizmo at the office. When construction was complete, I took a copy of the drawing package (yes, real paper), put it in a plastic envelope, and duct taped it to a hard-to-access interior location of the gizmo. FOURTEEN YEARS LATER, there was a natural disaster that took out multiple buildings in multiple locations that belonged to my employer. As a result, all electronic archives were lost. A couple years after that....

We got a similar situation, in the early 90's we used a specific modeling software, saved on floppies. All remaing records of this era are a box of projector slides containing photographs of computer screens with these blueprints.

...We found ourselves in a "discussion" with an alphabet soup regulatory agency. Details of the gizmo were suddenly very important. The front office was like, "Ummm.... We lost all our records two years ago." Things were looking bad. Then someone asked me about it.... I went out into the field. I checked. The envelope was still there and in tact. I got a good bonus that year.
