For those who don't know, have forgotten, or those who needed a reminder.

Also, GNU Ajax, your sister kitty won't leave the area where you passed.

A very late MV EDIT: my vet sent me a condolence card after Ajax died. It arrived today. Everyone who had worked with him, doctors and staff, each wrote a little note. I'm sure that it's standard practice, but it was a nice gesture. GNU Ajax the kitty, my cuddle buddy for the last 13 years.

All hail Sir Gnu

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Is this also related to GNU Not Unix, or just a coincidence?

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

He put a lot of references to general mythology into his books, so it doesn't seem like a stretch that this was a nod to real life GNU.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

while Sir Terry was also just a little bit of that kind of nerd, I think it's just a coincidence on that front.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Yea I’m confused

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

He may have borrowed it.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 4

OK, weird thing to get downvoted for - you guys know that the computing term came first, right?

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Yes and the themes are similar.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Coincidence I think? Pratchett book was 2000 something and GNU Linux stuff was 1980s?

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

GNU started in the 80's. Linux didn't start until the 90's.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Correct, was just word associating because Unix/Linux land is the very different realm than Fiction land :)

I decided to read all 41 books in the Discworld series a month ago (my son enjoys spending time at the local library, and I needed something to do). Haven't got to this part yet, but it's been absolutely brilliant. Mort in particular was fantastic.

GNU Terry Pratchett. I've read almost all of his books. I have most of them. But now I don't want to read the ones that remains because after these, there will be no more. He's a big inspiration in my own writing too.

My dude, my best friend and cuddle cat Ajax passed two weeks ago today. I knew it was coming, I did everything I could to make his last few days pleasant, I took photos, some video, and, while he was sitting on his favorite chair on the deck, watching the sunset with me, I recorded him purring. His deeply satisfied, almost drowsing purr. His happiest purr. I haven't been able to listen to it yet. But I will. When I'm ready.

I can't bring myself to read the last Tiffany Aching book for this very reason.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Completely understand this feeling. I HATE that there will never be any new Terry Pratchett books, it's long-term grief. But like someone else mentioned here - his books are endlessly re-readable. There are some I think I've read 10x (so far). Every now & then I do a bookshelf purge but I've never even touched the collection of Pratchetts. GNU Terry Pratchett

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I feel this. I've got the last ones waiting on my shelf.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Haven't read the soccer one yet, keeping it.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Same, it's one of the few I didn't read and still don't own. Actually never saw it in my usual library.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I do the entire discworld series on audio about every 4 years. This is one of the years. I'm on Feet of Clay. I have always done them in LSpace order before, this time I'm doing publication order. Both are interesting.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The Shepherd's Crown is sitting _right there_, but I just can't seem to start it for that very reason.

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

I only read it because it got spoiled for me. I kinda regret doing so. by the end it was clearly no longer Terry in the driving seat :(

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I understand where you are coming from, but here is the great thing about books: you can read them again! I have had new insights come out from rereading the books.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yes, but you can only read something for the first time once.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I think I read the entire Ankh morpork city watch storyline 4 or 5 times already XD

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

While I sm sure Terry would have been honored. He has other places to go and things to do. Bill Door will make sure he gets there safely.

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I try to put it in every webserver i configure. Giftagiraffe also had it.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Wor programmed GNU Terry Pratchett into the "Clacks overhead" of several of our websites. You can insert clacks as a meta tag and if a site has it, it'll show up when you visit it, if you have a plugin.

Wor = we. I screwed up and I'm too lazy to delete and retype.

He wrote his own obituary and greeted Death as a companion long awaited, and he killed off his favourite character so that she would be waiting for him. That’s as badass as his meteor sword.

GNU was first used in one of his children's book trilogy about Nomes (The Bromelead Trilogy) for an entirely different narrative purpose, whether or not he decided to use it in the discworld series to reflect this or whether each use was an entirely separate exposition of the usage I have no idea, but it may be that this was a common writing confusion of his, I often get the letters of small words around the wrong way when I write, and maybe he just went with it as a theme!

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

This is the only Gnu I've every heard of

2 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Pretty sure his name is Terry. I mean, just look at him. Looks like a Terry to me.

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

It is most assuredly gnot a gnat.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's not Unix...

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Dammit Stallman you and your recursive names!

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Thanks, I always wondered why people put the GNU in front of his name but felt I might look stupid for asking

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

What was said below, but also feel free to DM me any time. I'm literally a research scientist, if I don't know, I can (and will) find out. Learning stuff that I don't know is literally the best bit of my day, so ask away. Please note that I'm not Google, often go down rabbit holes, and am easily distracted, and this offer is open to everyone, so it may take me a bit to get back to you. Feel free to poke me if you haven't heard back in a bit. I don't mind. 😁

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The only stupid people are those that *don't* ask questions. You're always gonna be ignorant of something until you learn it, and asking questions, however basic they may seem, is an excellent way to do that.

Farther down the page it shows the code and where to put it depending the type of server you have so his name is transferred in the overhead of the page: http://www.gnuterrypratchett.com/ There’s also browser extensions that will light up when they detect the code: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/clacks-overhead-gnu-terry/lnndfmobdoobjfcalkmfojmanbeoegab

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I’m one of those that had forgotten the origin of GNU, so thanks for the reminder. Of course, the best way to remember Sir Terry is to continue to read his books

2 years ago | Likes 84 Dislikes 0

Serious question: this was before Gnu’s Not Unix? As in the open source community/foundation?

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I’ve just introduced my youngest to Tiffany Aching. Long Live the Disc.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And encourage others to read them as well! They helped me become the person I am today, and I am very grateful to PTerry, he changed by life

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I’ve been meaning to restart them so many time, but life keeps getting in the way, and the audiobooks I find aren’t the best

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

If you tried the same audiobooks I'm currently listening to, the quality of the first few are pretty bad. Either they have gotten better as I have progressed, or I've gotten used to it.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The old ones are pretty bad. But I'm fairly sure the newer are good.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I absolutely love the ones read by Stephen Briggs. I don't think he narrates all of them but I think he does the City Watch books and a lot of the witches ones. I've also seen productions with Bill Nighy, while I haven't listened to those, Nighy is pretty great so they might be worth a shot.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I love the Small Gods audio book I have narrated by Nigel Planer.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Agreed! And encourage others to read his books! As far as I'm concerned if you're old enough to read Harry Potter you're old enough to start reading Discworld.

2 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

Even long before you are old enough for Harry Potter, you could get some healthy Pratchett in your system! It all starts with Where's My Cow. Then you follow up with The Bromeliad and Johnny Maxwell, and after that get a footing in Discworld by diving into Tiffany Aching!

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Amen! I was enjoying Discworld audiobooks long before HP appeared, and got into the Bromeliad trilogy through the animated series before that! So even for poor readers (like younger me) there are many pathways into Pratchett.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Omg, I didn't even know there was an animated series?! Thank you for this! I probably won't be able to get my hands on it, but damn it if I won't try!

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Unfortunately the animated series only covered the first book (Truckers) before it got cancelled, but it's a classic British stop motion treat from legendary studio Cosgrove Hall (who also produced the animated Soul Music and Wyrd Sisters series'). I have no idea if it ever aired outside the UK, but there is a digitally restored DVD of the whole series available on Amazon if you want to get a copy. I can't promise it has aged well but it was my first exposure to Pratchett as a child!
