And how long till a Windows update "resets" those to on?

5 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Windows and Windows alone made the decision for my last PC to be run on Linux.

5 months ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Good luck. Microsoft re-enables all of the telemetry garbage after each update these days. Get Universal Windows Tweaker. It puts all the off switches on one screen. Alternatively, if you can manage it switch to Linux. Unless you're a competitive gamer or run proprietary software, Linux is simply better at this point.

5 months ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 1

assholes at microsoft set those settings back every update. They should be legally prossecuted for that. and failing that route they should be carnally prosecuted.

5 months ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Can I offer you a Linux in these troubling times?

5 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

What's ridiculous is that I would pay a real sum of money for a version of Windows without all that shit. No notifications, no AI, no suggestions. Just a barebones OS

5 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Thank you, this is one of those things that I deal with in the moment but never look up how to fix and forget about it.

5 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Think I'm gonna try Windows 10 LTS tbh

5 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The OS situation has always been unacceptably terrible for the user. It's either extremely closed and restrictive like Mac and Windows or the unstable user unfriendly Linux distros.
Hey, maybe SteamOS will come to stir the pot a bit.

5 months ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

I've been enjoying linux

5 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I keep ignoring it, it keeps popping up.

5 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I hate that my phone does the same thing. It tells me to finish setting it up and wants me to use facial recognition to unlock it but I absolutely don’t want to do that. I’m perfectly content manually typing in my PIN code as I don’t want anyone to be able to just grab my phone and stick it in my face to unlock it (oink oink)

5 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Not to mention that the phone company will then sell your facial recognition data.

5 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I hope Valve actually makes this the year of desktop Linux with SteamOS. No way in hell am I upgrading my PC to play my games.

5 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Why would you need to upgrade it, those games don't magically drop support for win10.

5 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Obviously, you aren't using Linux!

5 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Thanks OP! Got mine this morning ...

5 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

FYI - Windows 10's EOS date is October 14, 2025

Use Linux

5 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Or: Install Linux.

5 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Im paranoid my pc will try to brick itself by upgrading to 11, or by installing things like Copilot. Its regedited all automatic updates, and loked my system to the current build

5 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Oh yes! Those "YES or LATER" instead of "YES or NO" are so infuriating! I don't want to do it later, I don't want to do it ever!

5 months ago | Likes 109 Dislikes 0

How about all three options? We might want to do some things later. I dislike options that just disappear forever as much as i do nagging.

5 months ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

I always feel nervous when sites ask "never show me again."
Are you going to remember or ignore my answer forever?
So far, it doesn't even remember until the next time, which might be seconds later.

5 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah those types of terminal options are also horrible when you suffer form anxiety. Often i also feel i am not informed enough about the topic to make a choice, especially in my phone.

5 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sure, or more - as long as I get to opt out permanently

5 months ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Google Photos on Android must have asked me at least 50 times now whether I want to back up my photos to the cloud. Maybe there was some market research done that shows that asking a user 51 times is the key.

5 months ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Funnily, in some cultures, politeness dictates to say "no" to an offer three times. You should only accept if the question is asked a fourth time.

Looks like Google is going the extra mile.

5 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Give us your data, we'll take good care of it. It's for your own good. Ugh. They'll keep doing it until you hit the Yes button by mistake.

Lol...would say Linux Mint Cinnamon 1st, then Ubuntu (more powerful, less UX friendly).

5 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

"Linux Mint is a free and open source OS that works out of the box and comes with the apps most people need. It is based on Debian and Ubuntu" right, so, like i said. btw i daily'd Mint for about 4 years at one point. glad to see it's still around.

>suggesting literally the worst distro that exists
JFC

5 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 4

so if you want to convince people to check out linux, it helps to not be a fucking dick in public to their faces. but just to match your tone, you little shit, nix exists so ubuntu sure as shit aint the worst choice to direct a noob to. now pony up with a suggestion or kindly fuck off to your GNU/Circlejerk.

5 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Mint.

5 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Ok gatekeeper. Social skills would understand noobs aren't GNU experts and require elegant, exquisite, divine and other happy adjectives for UX.

"make sure you finish setting up before Oct 2025 when we stop all services for windows 10"

Windows stopped pest...notifying me about that around the time I installed Linux, for some reason...

5 months ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

You know what doesn't have this bullshit? Linux.

5 months ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 4

I wish all my software ran on linux :(

5 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Linux has its own bullshit let's be honest.

5 months ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 3

Linux can be complicated. I moved my family to Linux Mint and they barely noticed, like many basic users, 99.9% of what they do is in a browser anyway.

5 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It is getting better day by day. Which is more than you can say about Windows.

5 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

HDR is completely borked on Linux and forever will be, so if you have a good OLED, Linux is a no go. It really is a no go for gaming at all really, as it has abysmal performance if you can even run the game. Proton and WINE can only do so much. It's just not a viable gaming platform still unless you run with low end settings. AMDs drivers are also so bad, companies literally has stopped supporting AMD on Linux outright (DaVinci Resolve for instance).

5 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 3

Proton and wine means as long as you don't use kernel-level anti-cheat, and you're not literally world-class competitive gamer, it is practically indistinguishable from Windows gaming. HDR just got fixed in the Wayland protocol. As in last week, IIRC. It should be implemented in at least all the big desktop environments shortly. And I haven't heard about AMD drivers being bad, could you point me in the direction of a source?

5 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

HDR is not "fixed". Having HDR BARELY WORKING is not a fix. It's why NVIDIA is so far ahead of AMD as well, because of the insanely much better RTX HDR than the garbage Auto-HDR (which of course is Windows exclusive since, duh, it's a Windows feature and not available at all on Linux). For drivers, it's VERY WELL known that AMD is utter and complete garbage and you have to rely on the TERRIBLY badly documented OSS drivers, or use the horribly outdated built-into-kernel drivers, as the AMD-

5 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

provided drivers on their own site has horrible performance and are meant to be used for work desktops, not multimedia and gaming.

5 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Again, you claim that AMD drivers bad is well-known, by it isn't to me. And I'm on Linux, I follow Linux news, they all say AMD is the way to go, even for gaming. The Steam Deck uses AMD. Could you point me in the direction of a source saying it's bad?

5 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

How could it? It's an operating system kernel, after all.

5 months ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 3

Linux has, by far, the best installation experience. I recently had to install Manjaro on my laptop and I remembered just how good it feels. Because it's completely painless. Run the live USB, start the installation (takes, like, a few minutes to click a few times and select some options), go watch something on YouTube while it's done. Or just use the computer in general as you wish.

5 months ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Then again it needs to be better since linux users need to re-install it every 2 months after updates break everything.

5 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

That hasn't been my experience.

5 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I converted my friend a couple months ago, not a tech guy either. He needed a little help getting going, but he embraced the command line to get things setup - googling and texting me. Replaced Unity DM with KDE himself on day 3.

https://xkcd.com/456/

5 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The installation experience varies by distro. It is one of the only two really meaningful differences between distros. The other being their attitude to when you should update stuff.

5 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I love the part of setting up a new device where I systematically shut down every feature they've added since 1998. Oh, it connects to the internet? Better add some anti-virus. It wants to know my location? Fuck that!

5 months ago | Likes 83 Dislikes 0

Wondering which antivirus are you adding? Defender works well these days, and 3rd party free ones are almost malware themselves.

5 months ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Been using Defender since ditching one that turned into malware

5 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I will miss you, Spybot. Unfortunately you've been rendered useless

5 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Do you still have to pull the network cable out of machines with a wired connection before installing Windows in order to trick it into letting you install without logging into a Microsoft account?

5 months ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Yes

5 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

If your device is wifi capable this won’t work.

You can instead launch a command prompt from within the setup environment using SHIFT + F10 then entering the command ‘oobe\bypassnro’. Which allows you to bypass the network setup screen.

5 months ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Last many times I installed Win10, it didn't crack my wifi password during the install...

5 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

As far as I know it's a Win11 thing, I've never had it pop up for a Win10 Pro install. Laptops with WiFi always do this and I have to run the bypass command, because it won't let you proceed until you connect and set up an account.

5 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Remember to look at your settings from time to time, especially privacy settings, because Windows updates sometimes re-enable them without asking.

5 months ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 1

Yep, I have updates disabled and blocked as best I can manage because the shit they automatically roll out breaks things quite often. There are even cases where I've actively told Windows to deny a suggested update entirely, multiple times since it keeps asking. Only to discover later that it just went ahead and force-installed whatever it wanted without my permission, even rolling back broader security settings in the process to push through whatever they wanted from their update servers.

5 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I mean, it is their computer. They just let us pay for them, and occasionally use them. But they quite clearly own the things.

5 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

For Windows 11 it's nearly the same but they hid it a bit more. Settings > System > Notifications > Additional settings (way down at the bottom under the list of apps, scroll scroll scroll) > uncheck "Suggest ways to get the most out of Windows and finish setting up this device"

5 months ago | Likes 331 Dislikes 2

Since they baked in Recall into File Explorer in win 11 24H2, I downgraded to Win 10. I don't need that kind of vulnerability in my system.

5 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I despise CHANGE FOR THE SAKE OF CHANGE in an operating system

5 months ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

How do you feel about change so that the company can try to shut put competition and build a walled garden?

5 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

does that qualify as 'change for the sake of change?'

5 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The real tip is always in the comments. :)

Thank you.

I keep getting burned by that "You need a Microsoft Account" block screen, last registry hack I had to do to bypass the lock-out wound up disabling auto-rotation....still trying to make that work again...

"But the plans were on display…”
“On display? I eventually had to go down to the cellar to find them.”
“That’s the display department.”
“With a flashlight.”
“Ah, well, the lights had probably gone.”
“So had the stairs.”
“But look, you found the notice, didn’t you?”
“Yes,” said Arthur, “yes I did. It was on display in the bottom of a locked filing cabinet stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying ‘Beware of the Leopard."

5 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I got that reference. Except, they'll go one step further and say: "we removed that setting because nobody used it".

5 months ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

No, no , you never remove the settings.. They learn so much, while being busy. Mumbling liberal slogans "They all have a choice, teach a men to push a button... " while building up hatred for the world and the buttons.

5 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Dude i have to wipe my whole hard drive to switch the settings to even get windows 11. I was hopin microcenter would do it when they replaced most of it but nope. Trying to get windows 11 has been the most obnoxious thing ever.

5 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Just so you know that option doesn't exist anymore in 24H2. ☺️

5 months ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 6

I just installed 11 24H2 this past weekend. It's definitely still there. Relevant: https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2025/02/what-i-do-to-clean-up-a-clean-install-of-windows-11-23h2-and-edge/

5 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Uh, it is?

5 months ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

Maybe it's not there with the latest preview update installed but it's definitely not there on either of my computers? 🤷

5 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

It still exists for me on 24H2 on both of my windows PCs. Though both are Pro so not sure if it's the same on Home.
Also, the search function in the Settings app is pretty good, just type in suggest and it's an option there, then it'll show you that option directly.

5 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I resist using Windows 11. The removal of this setting confirmed my concerns

5 months ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 2

I had the "Upgrade to windows 11" button pop up in my front of my cursor mid-click like fucking malware, and then my laptop just instantly started rebooting and switching to windows 11 without asking if I was sure or anything.

5 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

the setting is still there in 24H2 on mine

5 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The last thing my dad ever did for me was build me a pc for my 18th birthday. I'm nearly 39 and I still have it completely the same as when it was built. If I'm ever forced onto windows 11 I'm going back to using it.

5 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I need windows for industrial automation software :(

5 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

We’re forced to migrate since 10 is winding down security updates without extended support purchases.

5 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Same, if only the pushy way they try to get me to upgrade my win10, those are fucking ads! Ads in my os for another os, fuck off will all that shit. Windows 11 needs to fix a whole lot of things before i consider using it. I would rather go back to XP

5 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Windows 7 is best windows.

5 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I mean, you're not wrong to resist it. The option is there but as a Windows 11 user, I suggest you don't go to Windows 11.

5 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Windows 11 is horseshit. All of the problems in the Windows 10 release were brought back and hidden better. The amount of crap I had to pull to just enable the button allowing me to skip my Microsoft account login when installing was maddening. Not even enabling the setting, just the fuckin g button!!!

5 months ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

End of windows 10 support is basically the final straw that's going to make me finish my trans girl evolution and get Linux set up on my system

5 months ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

HDR is completely borked on Linux and forever will be, so if you have a good OLED, Linux is a no go. It really is a no go for gaming at all really, as it has abysmal performance if you can even run the game. Proton and WINE can only do so much. 5 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Or if you have multiple screens, or multiple graphics cards like on a laptop. People pretend that Linux is fine but then the solution to a problem is "just don't use the GPU lol" Another thing that bugs me is that you go on any forum asking for help and they'll just tell you off for expecting it to work like Windows. Like, mate, you guys told me that it's good now. It's not my fault that there are still major issues that have been around for 12+ years.

5 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yeah basically this. Its the only reason windows is still as big as it is under home consumers. Its also THE argument against anything Apple, even tho the latest processors they made are pretty great.

But you cant seriously game on it. If you can spend apple money, you can buy a much fatter game pc, and thus… windows

5 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

If you you've not chosen a distro yet, I suggest Mint. There are a few different options when you go to download - they refer to the system UI. I suggest Cinnamon - it's clean, slick, it looks amazing. Also, very close to Windows, so it's familiar anyway.

5 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I have a program that has no windows version. How can I best use it? Should I use a windows emulator or should I install a second OS?

5 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Have you heard the Gospel of OneDrive?

5 months ago | Likes 142 Dislikes 4

FUCK OneDrive... It's nothing but an annoying virus, just like phone link.

5 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I just disabled it on startup and dont even think about now.

5 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

By "print" you surely mean "upload to the cloud", right? Yeah, that makes sense.

Pairs perfectly with Office 365! Except when a prob on our side crashes every user in the world for an hour.

Onedrive almost Bricked 2 of my Computers when I bought a new one and Onedrive turned on before anything else during a Wired file Transfer.

5 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Did You Know? You can make your files more secure by keeping them in a location where anyone could get to them! You can make them more expensive to store too! Who wouldn't want that?!?

5 months ago | Likes 80 Dislikes 0

Sub scrip ton raise be. HellOwLewdYeah

5 months ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Can we make it automatic so your files aren't even stored on your computer 🥺

5 months ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

I was so pissed off when I first set up windows 11 and saw all these green check marks on my files only to realize all my tax info was backed to one drive automatically without my consent. I had to make a one drive account to make sure to delete it, then I gutted the operating system of all bloatware. Why isn't there a preset consumer friendly Linux system or any other operating system available, I'm so tired of Microsoft

5 months ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

It's this bullshit that made me finally make the switch to Linux. It's been a dream.

5 months ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 0

Linux gives you a tb of online storage and local syncing?

5 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 8

Don't need it, don't use it, don't want it, get constant ads and reminders to set up something I won't use. Sick of ads for that and teams. I have no use for it, but I'm forced to see shit about it that I can't turn off. Happy other people find use for it, but stop constantly shoving it down my throat

5 months ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 1

Not for free, but it's also not reading your email, listening over your microphone, peeking through your webcam or recording your activity. I mean, unless you tell it to.

5 months ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

How did you transfer all your stuffs? I assume Linux can read FAT and NTFS and just kinda yoink it all?

5 months ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Yep, i have one 12 tb drive that stores my media and two nvme drives with one os each in case I need windows for whatever reason. Most steam games work thanks to steam os and the steam deck. I installed mint and was extremely happy to see that my hardware hardware was detected and everything worked. There is definitely still a learning curve, but if you are just browsing the web and playing games it's much easier to jump in.

5 months ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I personally went Fedora and opted not to dual boot. Just went full Linux. I took an image of my Windows OS before doing that so if I needed to roll back to it, I could easily re-image my PC. Every now and then I have to mount that image to grab a file or 2. But yeah Steam is pretty easy to deal with. The only challenge was Minecraft but I got that working after a little tinkering.

5 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Oh! I keep thinking about this. What flavour of Linux are you using? Did you experiment with other distro's? Is there anything you miss about Windows? Is there anything which is harder to do on Linux?

5 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I personally went with Fedora. I tried a bunch of distros. I really liked Kubuntu because of it's customizations but 2 problems I had was it was almost too customizable. It also didn't play nice with the graphics because it used Wayland with KDE. I found that Gnome did better with my AMD graphics card and supported the drivers better. I have really come to love the clean look of Fedora and it is difficult anytime I jump into Windows environments.

5 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

As for missing anything about Windows... I do miss most stuff working out of the box without much effort. There's so much support for Linux nowadays though that it's really not much of a headache. But other than that.... not really. I love not being bothered about setting of OneDrive or Copilot or anything like that.

5 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Thanks, this is great. But what did you find did not work out of the box? Software, Hardwear, external monitors, network, HIDs?

5 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I use Linux mint, based on Ubuntu. I've tried using others in the past, but nothing recently. So far it's been easy for me. All my hardware was found and installed properly. Most games installed through steam work just fine. You are no longer forced to use the terminal for some things, making it easier to actually learn it. I've been extremely happy with it so far

5 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0
