I absolutely love POP!_os and I am super comfortable on linux systems, but while everyone makes this big deal that it supports all these games, I frankly dont get the same quality graphics on nix as I do Windows. Its bearable, but slightly choppy (nvidia 3090 ti). And after a while it drives me crazy. My laptop runs linux. If I had a second desktop I would definitely run something debian based on it, but I'm leaving my gaming rig as is. And to be fair, I tried.

Just wish gaming companies would support linux more in multiplayer games only reason i havent switched

I haven't moved my son over because he liked fortnite, but Fortnite also no longer works on the latest Windows version. Unless they see the light and make updates optional in the next couple of weeks, I'll be quitting as soon as they push 24H2.

So... How many rootkits have they installed on your computer?

1 but to just stop playing with friends is not an option for my mental health

I hate that my org uses Teams. We put sensitive personal info about our clients there, and I don't trust it at all.

win 8 and 10 suck too.

On the technical side Win11 is pretty good, I just hate the UI, integrated ad/spyware crap and everything being forced from the MS Side. It's like a mobile phone experience on a pc, and i already hate that on actual mobile phones.

I don't mind the UI, but Windows updates are constantly breaking things and you literally cannot disable automatic updates to avoid it. Microsoft even knows it's screwing stuff up and still doesn't give you the ability to opt out for more than a month.

But thats the OS by now?

Unfortunately, an OS is a package deal, at least to whatever extent your purchase / license terms / key, and domain settings, allow -- tl;dr you hate Win11 period*.

It is with Windows yeah.

I consider all US tech that isn't open source compromised at this point. Working at a school with a pretty progressive culture I'm pushing for us to abandon Onedrive, Teams, Outlook, Whatsapp and the like. I'm not trusting our kid's data with that shit. Looking to switch to local alternatives, as far as they exist...[Cries in European tech funding].

Might switch to linux

I'm on 10 (IoT LTSC) probably for as long as it lasts with linux as a secondary, but the core question when 10 isn't viable is which alternative is the path of least resistance while doing what you want. There's a whole load of "but you can run this script from a random on the internet to de-fuck it" and hope MS doesn't re-fuck it on the next update, but you shouldn't need to do that. MS shouldn't be adding resistance into their base OS, stop bundling shit.

Windows 11 is better than 10 imo. 10 was just a shitty version of 8.1, which itself was worse than 7. At least Windows 11 has a functioning search bar.

With ads

7 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

That alone makes it a no go. I don't even care about any other spec.

7 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

What ads are you talking about? I don't see any ads.

So it's a setting you can toggle...

Not if it's a work laptop where you don't have permissions. Glad you dismissed it as "oh it's just a setting "
like it's a perfectly normal thing to have

Couldn't you disable automatic updates in Windows 10? On 11, you can delay them for a few weeks, but you literally can't just opt out of new versions when they break stuff.

7 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You can on 11 as well.

7 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The support forums say you can't. I have a message saying I've delayed as long as I can and then updated.

7 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You can use a registry key setting to block it for like 100 years or however long.
