I still have Windows 95, 98SE, 2000, XP and 7 running in virtual machines in case I get to feeling nostalgic. But I agree that Win7 and XP were pretty good.
The way I see it is that the OS is a stage for other applications to perform on, it needs to provide the framework for them to build upon, talk to hardware, launch them, and otherwise get the fuck out of the way. I don't want to use windows itself, I want to use the apps to do things
2000 pro was a massive leap forward but drivers were still a big problem. XP fixed the vast majority of those issues for desktops and improved power saving features to the point they were usable.
Yeah those were very good too. I just like the Windows 7 because it wasn't spying on you but had all the good stuff from Windows XP. And looked nice. Windows 10 was cool as well but privacy it was definitely a big concern. Don't even get me started on Windows 11 haha
Man, I have heard a lot of people praise 2000 pro. Did I just have a really shit run with it?? I wanted to douse the whole damn thing in gas and light a match.
It was a massive leap forward from NT4 or Windows 95/98 or the truly awful Windows ME. You had an OK GUI and most of your hardware would work (relative to previous operating systems). From a corporate perspective, Windows 2000 gave you usable modem support AND stability and enough USB support for mice, keyboards and printers compared to NT4. Windows XP gave you stability and vast hardware support and a very usable GUI.
Don't use outdated operating systems. If it's not being updated all the vulnerabilities are going to be well known and easily abused. Switch to a new operating system (learn linux perhaps).
iirc at some point the windows 7 source code got leaked just like xp did. That and Win7 was so much easier to mod from the get go, i can imagine this will definitely become like a linux distro.
Bet. 52. Worked on win7 extensively throughout its lifespan. Was it better than the crap we have now? Hells yes. But that's a very, very low bar. I still remember 95 much more fondly.
95? oh, it was a great OS. If you reboot it 5 times a day and reinstall like each 6 months. More often if you played game on it. No wonder it was nicknamed Mustdie. It is 95 that created "let's close all the windows, get out, restart the car and just drive on" joke. Earned Bill Gates a reputation of a person to blame for every fault of the world. I used to have a 95 install disk in my EDC bag. Because you never know, when someone asks to "please check my computer, it does not work that well".
And now with windows 11, it doesn't matter how many times you reboot, because that annoying bug is a feature according to Microsoft, and if you reinstall it it somehow adds even more spyware than last time?
Honestly, if you were having to reboot that often, you probably needed a defrag. We had our systems do those nightly. Yeah, 95 had its quirks, but they were easy to learn quirks and microsoft wasn't adding new ones with every patch...
windows 11? what is that and why would anyone install it? reboot, defrag, removal of temporary files, cleaning up the registry, removing yet another 100 viruses and malwares the user managed to get... format/reinstall takes less time than dealing with all that individually anyway and yes, all that makes 95... a really bad memory though 98 was worse, linoleum was a disaster The first actual MS OS was NT, the first usable was 2000, the first good one was XP... after SP2 came out
I recently used an old core to Duo PC and put Linux mint on it and it runs great. Just wanted to give it a try and mess around with it a bit. That way I can be more prepared for the Great migration
Better times indeed. I don't miss downloading music at 28 kb per second and taking a week to download a music album. Legitimately of course /s. One of my favorite songs was LiNkIN-Park in-the -end.exe

XP was awesome.

Literally have a Windows 7 laptop right beside me filled with GOG games because it just works without any advertisements or annoyances.

Holy shit what what?! The peak of windows is still being maintained by people?!

Windows 98. It was like having a personal assistant, not a committee to which you must submit projects.

I liked NT4.

Before that they said the best Windows was XP. Before that it was Windows 2000. One day it'll be Windows 11.
JamesTDG
Lol fuck no. Not if we keep the memories of win 7 preserved.

2000 pro or xp pro

XP Pro has been, by far, the best MS OS I've ever used.

They keep on adding (or gutting) shit that breaks the duct tape I have on for compatibility.

Well yeah. Of course.

Na I'll do what I want thanks.
KilroyLichking
by the same token fuck windows 11. learn linux
JamesTDG
I mean, if it's being treated like Linux, then perhaps there's gonna be a security nerd out there who will try to backport all of the security fixes

One of the best things about linux is that it is open source. Unless they did the same here I am skeptical.
