I'm practicing for a commission piece and I want to try to capture dissociation, loneliness, sorrow... we have already decided on a different pose, but they would like some of the textures I've used in other paintings incorporated into this one as well. I'm definitely going to use some crackle paste, but I would also like to incorporate some pumice and sand. What do you think?

thank you for asking,
I feel rough textures would give it a grounded earthy feeling which seems a contrast to 'dissociation', you could lean into the ghostly ephemeral tone that is already there. something about your themes makes me think that the figure should barely matter if it is even there, which is how i feel when I am lonely.

I actually like the stark background and think more texture is a great idea! I like a painting with substance and the figure is great

Can you use texture to single the character out from the background to make the character feel more alone?
I saw your other comment saying you wanted the character to blend into the background. Maybe you can use texture to help that by having the character be textured, the background be mostly not textured but blending in between.

I very much like this idea !!! Thank you 😀 I just don't wanna over do it, but at the same time, if I do, I would rather make that mistake on this "practice" one !! Lol

Thank you!!! I finished the figure but I'm too nervous to add the texture now 🤣

No clue, traditional painting already has textures so it doesn't necessarily need extra. But textures feel appropriate for the themes.

This is true. the person commissioning the piece requested I use some of the textures I've used in some abstract pieces, but I don't usually incorporate it into work like this. I just don't want the texture to be distracting

That is the problem with traditional painting that you can't tell what it looks like until you try, but then there's a risk that you can't always UN-do it if it doesn't work. I hope it works out though!

Thank you so much!!! That's exactly the struggle but also an amazing aspect of creating art. You never know!!! 😀

Before you add texture, try adding some background or colors, or something. Just the figure seems too plain.

I'm definitely gonna add some background color. I want it to seem like she is dissolving into the background!! 😀

I think people would want to focus on the face so maybe add some facial features.
