I added a shelf to the base of my workbench from the same soft maple milled to 1.25”.

I used tongue and groove construction with a little more than 1/2” extra space for seasonal wood movement.

Playing cards help me evenly space out gaps between slats while I screw them down to the support.

The pieces between the legs are just left floating as they are captured by a tongue & groove.

Filled the holes with 1/2” walnut plugs and rubbed some finish over everything.

Gorgeous! How was planing down the laminate top? I decided to go slab top because I was scared of all the grain directions

I used a router and a spool board bit. There was no tear out, but a small bit of burning on one board to sand down. 1/2

I used the pencil trick and sanded evenly and everything came out flat. 2/2
