1. Left has one side a parallelogram, right side has a rectangle.
2. Left line is shared between upper and lower shapes. Causing the lower shape to shift the the right.
3. Left line intersects at a different angle than the right line.
4. Left arrows point in, right arrows point out.

This time of OI is literally painful for me to look at because my left eye is lazy and both eyes move diffrently to try and compensate yet I CLICK THEM ANYWAY

Happy with all of them except for the orange arcs

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Most of these I get. But I don't understand how the second picture works.

1 year ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

Me too. When he uses his fingers, he has to widen them for them lower arc.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I think it's the angle of the edges. If you took the bottom one and lined up it's top corner with the upper arc's top corner, you would see them as a similar size.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Same... pls explain for monke brain

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Not sure but I think it has to do with the lower arch being further to the right. We see the straight line of both arches on the left so perceive it as connected & even but really the whole arch is shifted to the right. If you put a big (mental) spot on the top left corner of each and then think about the distance of those spots, mentally move the lower arch to align with top.

The trick is that you should be comparing the sizes (especially on the right-hand side) on the *diagonal*, not vertically:

Help, can't see circle :(

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh I see it, between the rectangles

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

For those that need the red circles - I know I did.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Even after seeing the circles, my mind keeps returning to the rectangles.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Mine too. I can see the circles when I want to, but the default state is rectangles for me.

I feel that shapes for products we buy in large chain box stores are exploiting this optical fact, in order to hide the downsizing of whatever it is that they sell.

1 year ago | Likes 264 Dislikes 1

100% they are. Remember the Farmville game on Facebook a while back, made by Zynga? Zynga hired psychologists to advise them on how to make the game more addictive and on how to get people to get their friends to play.

1 year ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

They are. You ever notice that boxes that have less in them now aren't any shorter? They either put less in them or they make the boxes narrower, so that from the front it looks like you're getting just as much as you're used to. Then they rerelease the old size as a "family" or "value" size at a higher price (but still cheaper per weight than the "regular" size).

I used to use Scott before I decided I'm worth Charmin, and the last pack I bought of Scott, well. Scott has a few ways of getting away with still being 1000 sheets. In one move the roll became much narrower. Their main tactic is thinning the paper out though. The rolls stay as far as they've always been to hide the change, but the tube gets way bigger. The paper change on the last pack I got was insane. How are you supposed to wipe your ass with paper that thin?

1 year ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Big companies and the whole entire marketing field does do psychological research on the consumer base so you're probably not far off. Whatever will boost their profits!

There should be a name for illusions which play havoc with your optical senses.
Damn you English, you've failed me for the last time!

1 year ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Spanish, then?

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Debería haber un nombre para las ilusiones que causan estragos en los sentidos ópticos.
¡Malditos español, me has fallado por última vez!

The last two I can see immediately, but the first two are infuriating. Wtf

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

The first one isn't helped by the cameraman. Not only do they not give you a decent view of the whole image for more than a couple of seconds, but they also film it at an angle — meaning that the 'horizontal' one is foreshortened, and so actually *is* smaller on the screen than the vertical one

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I haven't seen the first one before. Neat!

Now I have to get high to let my brain uncoil.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's scary being confronted with the absolute fact that everything you think you know is made up. We know the world through two portholes barely larger than a pencil lead, exposing a coarsely pixelated sensor that's blurred behind a screen of nerves and blood vessels. What we "see" of the world is not what's in our eyes. It's largely imagined interpretations of what those sensors are seeing, constructed from interpreting what we see now in light of faulty memories of what we've seen before.

Wait til you hear about Magenta, and how it doesn't exist.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Its the feeling of trying to reconcile the cognitive dissonance that your brain is wrong and continues to be wrong even when presented with empirical evidence proving it's wrong.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Most of them I understand how the additional lines change perception….but the 2nd one….i have no idea how that works.

1 year ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

So you know how if you draw two circles, with one inside the other, the inside circle is has a shorter line? We've got both of those circles here twice over, with most of them cut off. One is orange, one is red. Look at the far left. The slices align going up-left don't they? That's how it tricks your brain. Your brain thinks "oh hey they align!", but they don't. Because on the far right it's way offset isn't it? Mentally rotate that top slice rightward, so it sits exactly above the bottom slice

1 year ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

And yes, when I read this in a few months, I will not understand my own explanation either. Good luck!

1 year ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Holy shit thank you. That makes total sense and it was the only one stumping me. Thanks!

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Actually - thanks for explaining, my brain wasn't happy! It's the offset.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Split second before the drag covers the right, you can clearly see it's different colours

1 year ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 38

The only difference is the color of the background. Dress is the same

1 year ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 1

My brother in christ! You can literally screen shot the video at the start and do it yourself.

1 year ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Correct.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Your eye interprets colors based on averaging and also context. The background lighting in the different squares changes your perception between one being a black/blue dress in bright light, and a gold and white dress in dark lighting.

1 year ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Nope

1 year ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

WE DONT TALK ABOUT THE DRESS!
