Rally drivers are seriously lunatics. Like they must be missing the part of their brain that says “this should scare the shit out of you it’s a bad idea”. They’re nuts! I love it
Most racing driver have no imagination of what would happen. And when they do they start rebelling, like after Senna's death. Or like Walter Röhrl has putt it: "My friends said that i would be dead if i crashed it, (the Lancia with fake rollcages etc) I answered them that i didn't plan to crash it." Driving a 325hp ground to ground missle with less then 960kg. (960kg/2,116 lb was the minimum weight, but it was rumored that often it drove lighter).
OK, another comment after calling this driver a lunatic...
Why am I mesmerized by this? Why do I keep watching this and loving it? You bet I am envious that I will never drive like this and enjoy it! So much fun!
I had one of those Dirt video games and played it for about a year until I got really good. Then, I didn’t play for a year. When I tried to play it again, it was like I had never played the game.
The bumper-cam makes this look faster and more impressive than it really is. Don't get me wrong, WRC drivers are incredibly talented - far beyond my skills - but I can play Dirt Rally 2.0 and put in a mediocre performance, and then watch the replay from the bumper cam and it seems like I'm the next Sebastian Loeb.
I've always wanted to be the passenger. "Half gas left right at 30 meters. Brake Left 2 meters push thru past left 33 meters. Uptake right 44 degrees two meters. Downswing 2 meters left brake 66 meters."
Still far and away the coolest racing event I’ve ever seen live. I’ve seen GT1 cars backflip and f1 cars at full song but watching these guys thread a cattle gate at 80 sideways on gravel is so cool.
Same. Seems fairly straight forward to keep a car going where it's pointed on a track with consistent grip that you get to go again and again. Going hard on a course where you get a practice and then full tilt while rhe grip level changes frequently and the quickest way around a corner is sideways seems to add a whole other level of skill.
Even more exciting is when you're running late so you get to do the whole fun bit at the end in the dark, everyone in the car gets to share the fear. Bonus points if you're also in the mountains with steep drops.
I lost it to a hard drive crash, but I had a bad-ass gif of a photographer standing at the edge of the course to take photos- a rally car comes flying over a hill, loses control, and would have hit the guy full-on if the photographer hadn't taken a step backwards. The dude is totally non-chalant about it, even raising his camera to take a picture of the wreckage just a second or two later. It's *insane*
My parents both did Ralleys. Mom was the driver, my dad the shotgun guy constantly shouting stuff to say what comes next. Spent childhood on races and in formel-pit-lanes. I cannot say I ever met someone distinguishing and prioritising like that. It's like riding. Some showjump, some just ride privately through the forest, some vault, some minority has the most expensive horses dressaging in olympia. All united by the love for horses. Horses, metal & oil smells good whereever you are.
Nascar I do not understand, but rally and F1 are vastly different. F1 is zen. You optimize your lines be consistent. Every fraction of a second matters each lap. In rally, you adapt. It's never the same. Raw driving talent matters.
IoM TT is not MotoGP. It’s super bikes and other classes. It is also one of the best motorsport races in the world. Crazy high speed and closed public roads through villages - just nuts
That said, they did run a MotoGP bike around the track as an exhibition a few years ago. The actual TT has classes that use stock bikes that are available from a dealership and road legal apart from tyres. They also have a fully electric class which usually includes university engineering teams!
I am wary of the term "stock bike". Many years ago my son bought a near new 250cc Suzuki Repsol. This thing had the tightest power band I ever saw on a bike (I rode HDs, so there's that) but when it hit the start of that band the power unleashed was fear inducing. Like you said, walk in to a showroom, pay your monies and walk out with mad machine.
Absolutely. F1 is now but a shadow of its former self, not that it could ever compare to WRC. By the look of the driver's action on the wheel I'm thinking he's not steering the vehicle but instead making small adjustments to drift.
The ground coverage of an F1 car is equivalent to a full size SUV. They're enormous despite being very low. You can barely fit them 2 wide at some tracks so the racing is much more processional now.
F1 is worse because the cars got to big and have no space to overtake without bullshit like DRS, the enforcement of the rules is so inconsistent drivers like max can get away with punting cars into the shadow realm with no punishment.
F1 got boring and this has been going on since before Jules Bianchi's death. The cars are too wide and long to allow for proper racing on real racetracks, the rules and penalties are inconsistently applied and there are barely any gravel traps anymore that punish exceeding track limits. Overreliance on ground effect and too wide tires cause massive spraying which is why we don't see proper rain races anymore.

watching his hands on the steering wheel reminds me of any racing arcade game i’ve ever played

Shouldn't there be someone in the passenger seat yelling directions and crying?

Every time I watch these I wonder how the fuck they ever have traction. These drivers are insane!

The tires, suspension, and brakes are almost as expensive as the rest of the car.

I wanted to try this, but then when I saw what was involved, fuck that! Gotta have more balls than brains for this!!!

I imagine amateur rally racing a bit less intense. But you'll likely still need a car with a full cage
SlammedCarsAreRuinedCars
Rather, you need training and practice. Then, you're just dancing with the car, and it's a beautiful feeling.

That roll cage and helmet, and thirty-seven-point harness, aren't going to keep the inertia from getting in if you hit one of those trees.

Actually, they do a really good job of keeping injuries minimal. The safety of rally cars has skyrocketed since the 80s and 90s
