Black Pepper is a dad! Part 2!

Jun 8, 2025 4:13 PM

Well, we had more surprises yesterday. Three more secret eggs hatched. And between me trying to deal with them and the Baby Dragon, ooof. It was rough! Quack Hubby tried his best to help but accidentally put down the wrong bedding. So I had to clean that up but then it started to storm HARD. Not a fun evening. Long story short, the babies are now safely isolated with Barbie (BBQ) in their own home and area with fresh bedding, food, and water.

This was the third to last chick that hatched in the middle of the storm. Looks like a Cochin and Welsummer mix. The feather feet are getting me!

This was the second one that hatched. I believe it is the Cochin x Old English cross? It will be a bantam and probably have the frizzle gene!

This was the first one from yesterday. I believe we have settled on Peppercorn since all of our chickens are wing flavors.

And this gumpy one was the surprise that I found while trying to move the family to a safer location. I honestly don't know who's child this one is but looks like they will be a frizzle!

Happy family in their new home. There are a few more eggs that when I candled last night look to have babies as well. Really wasn't expecting this secret clutch but one of my neighbors is eager to have them once I am able to sex them.

We really don't have a boring life around the Quack Hold!

She did. She's done it before so I try to keep her from doing it. Since I gave birth, my hubby has been taking care of the ladies. Looks like he missed some eggs. 😂 Then try to scoop out the cedar shavings he accidentally put in the coop and then the storm. I finally had to pull up the backup-backup coop. 🤣

Yay for getting it sorted and a place for them to go later!

My neighbors are a young couple who always wanted to have chickens. I told them that I can show them the ropes and once these babies get bigger, they will go to their new home. :D

Do you have any Maran chickens?

No, just an Old English, ISA Brown, Welsummer, and Buff Orpington. All but Barbie are rescue chickens. :)
