Introduction

Since the 15th of November 2014, around 25 dedicated builders have been working on a recreation of The Shire from J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings". The map is at a 1:58 scale and is arguably one of the most detailed and well-researched maps ever made in the game.
Part I: Lore Accuracy

Hobbiton-across-the-Water with Bag End in the background. The layout and look of this was based on Tolkien's drawing of it, and this aptly demonstrates our primary mission - to recreate Tolkien's vision as faithfully as possible.

The front door of Bag End at sunset. Bag End, the home of Bilbo and Frodo Baggins, is one of the largest hobbit holes (also known as smials) in the Shire, and was one of the first projects we completed.

The Old Mill in Hobbiton, owned by Ted Sandyman.

Bywater Lane, which runs between Hobbiton and Bywater. This was the site of the Battle of Bywater, the final battle in the War of the Ring.
Part II: Villages

Bywater Pool at sunset. When the Shire is finished, it will have twenty five villages, ranging from hamlets like Tookbank to the de facto capital of the Shire, Michel Delving.

Sackville, a village in the Southfarthing. Bilbo's tiresome relatives, the Sackille-Bagginses, owned a lot of land here.

Woodhall, a village in the Eastfarthing. It was built just within the borders of Woody End, and is surrounded by old oaks.

Stock, a village in the Eastfarthing on the banks of the Brandywine. The large building in the centre is the Golden Perch inn, said by Pippin to serve the best beer in the Eastfarthing.

Scary, a village in the northern parts of the Eastfarthing (for those wondering about the name, it may be supposed to contain the English dialectal "scar", meaning "rocky cliff").

Greenfields, a village in the Northfarthing. It was here in 2747 of the Third Age that a force of hobbits, led by Bandobras "Bullroarer" Took, defeated an invading force of goblins from Mt. Gram.
Part III: Farms and Farmland

Tolkien based the Shire upon his memories of an idyllic childhood in rural Warwickshire during the 1890s. As such, the Shire was a rural society whose inhabitants mostly concerned themselves with the growing of crops and rearing of livestock.

A rainy day in harvest season. Our fields are based on a system of four-field crop rotation, where different crops are grown in a field three years out of four and the field is left to "fallow" on the fourth year in order to let the soil rest. This was a system used all over Europe before the advent of industrial fertilisers.

Farmer Maggot's farmyard and house in the Marish. There are more than 60 such farmhouses across the Shire, and we worked out which farmer owned which set of fields before building them in order to keep the crop rotation consistent.

Whitwell, the farm where Pippin and his family live.
Fields at sunset

Part IV: Terrain and Geology

As well as researching old farming techniques, we make sure that we adhere to geological and botanical realism in our terrain. As one of our admins is a professional geologist, we are able to put a great deal of expertise into it.

A mill in Woody End. An oak and willow tree grow over the stream, and there are beds of stinging nettles and Angelica sylvestris on its right bank. We use a mod that allows us to add as many blocks as we need, and so we have a multitude of plant species for use across the Shire.

The tree that Frodo, Sam and Pippin used to hide from the Nazgûl. Bracken grows on the left side of the picture, and the tree itself is shrouded in moss as it is growing in a damp patch of land.

As the Shire is a well-populated part of Middle-earth, it was important for us to show a relationship between the hobbits and their environment (beyond the farmland). An area of forest next to the road has been cut and burned by hobbit woodsmen to allow new growth to take root, and stands of rosebay willowherb have quickly sprung through.

However, not all the hobbits' uses for the environment are so practical. There are a web of hiking trails across many of the Shire's more wild areas.

This is the wild part of the Marish, a low-lying area next to the Brandywine in the Eastfarthing. A stream called the Stock-brook runs through it, and the village of Woodhall can be seen amongst the trees in the background.

Rushock Bog in the Westfarthing, shrouded in mist. The hobbits use this to collect rushes for their floors, peat for their fires, and even bog iron for their forges.

Our geological realism also extends to the types of rock seen across the Shire. They vary as widely as the slate quarried in Scary...

...to the red sandstone of the Green Hill Country.

A path through Bindbole Wood in the Northfarthing.
Part V: Conclusion

The Bridge of Stonebows, where the Great East Road crosses the Brandywine and leaves the Shire. Roads go ever on...

An overview of the Shire as of the beginning of September 2015. This should give you a sense of the sheer scale of the project (and especially of our farmland). In total, it measures around 3500x2500 blocks.

For comparison - Tolkien's map of the Shire that appears in the Fellowship of the Ring. Keep in mind that this is a more "zoomed-in" view of the Shire compared to our overview image.
A topographic map of the Shire

For all you geology nerds out there. The hills and streams of the Shire are clearly visible in this view.

Our players enjoy a few well-earned comforts in the elven camp near Woodhall. I hope you enjoyed taking this in-depth look into our work!

Someone should make a post about the Westeroscraft builds. Pretty fucking amazing.
Desomega
No idea why i got downvoted. This build is amazing, just i think more people should know about Westeroscraft as well.

This is amazing! As a huge Tolkien fan and Minecraft player, hats off to you and your team!
octamonk3y
I need a link to the texture and shader packs - please

But is your gpu up to the challenge? Because Even 980's have it rough occasionally.

I note there is no mention of Sharky's End. I guess it's a purely Bywater joke, though.

Appreciated comment :D

I would love to see an AMA with these builders

I was briefly apart of this project, I helped to build Fangorn Forest and a couple rivers. I tried to explore Moria one time... Still lost.

Hello, almost-brother.
Amattawityou
Wasn't there already a big Middle Earth in Minecraft thing going on with structures being built at like a 1:1 scale?

This deserves more upvotes.

For some reason someone downvoted you so have an upvote, my friend.

IDontKnowHowToHuman
It's brighter shade of octarine.
XxPACMANxX
Can someone please link me to the shader pack, and the texture pack used for the showcase? Looks stunning.
GaryFreakinOak
So likely many of those textures are totally custom, and not in a standard pack. You'd need the mod and the config and the block list to use
GaryFreakinOak
it properly.
GaryFreakinOak
The shader is Sonic Ether's Shader Mod. It is THE shader mod. As for the textures, they are using a mod that lets them make blocks as they
GaryFreakinOak
need them.
Ronnystigs92
So, I have minecraft on the XB1. there's no way to play on this map is there?
GaryFreakinOak
No, you can't get PC maps on xbox.

Love Tolkien. I have a tattoo of the "the road goes ever on.." poem in Quenya Tengwar on my arm

Me to, it'd be awesome, imagine being able to retrace the whole journey from Shire to Mount Doom, and every other journey? Awesome...

Yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes
Craftlords
I would love to be a part of something like this from the beginning, but so far I always jump in near the end. But great work guys!
FjordoftheRings
How would you like to play test some mini games (I'm not a child, I'm an adult who is making Mini games for competitive and fun PvP)
Craftlords
I would love too ;)
Fornad
For us, the journey is just beginning. We plan to do all of Middle-earth.
Craftlords
My knowledge about Lord of the Rings isn't that great, I know shame on me, but I haven't read the books and the movies are a long time ago..
InhibitedCurve
That's insane.
Rainbowdieahrrea
How long would an endeavor like that take? I would assume years
Aerolfoz
Oh yes. I was hoping so. Looking forward to the Black Tower and Minas Tirith! With your skills it will be awesome :D
Gammaxana
Taking members?
Fornad
Absolutely! Search for ArdaCraft on Google
TheMaXX37
Just wondering, was this is creative or survival?
wanderrrr
Definitely creative. It would be far too difficult on survival.
Gammaxana
Will bing and yahoo fit the bill. Perhaps ask Jeeves?
illogicalphallusies
you ever get people that join amd just destroy stuff for hours? how do you rectify that?
Xanaduu
For alot of projects like this you have to apply
diphenhydraminehcl50mg
My basic understanding of Minecraft is that Enderman or a Creeper can destroy this at anytime? Am I wrong?
Misskwy
Creepers can explode and destroy on a small radius, Endermen can pickup certain blocks.. but pretty sure this map is on peaceful so no mobs.
IDontKnowHowToHuman
① Huge difference between playing SURVIVAL mode or CREATIVE mode. In survival, there are monsters & gravity & you have to work to build
IDontKnowHowToHuman
② everything, including the tools that are needed to build everything with. In Creative mode, you have freedom to place or remove any
IDontKnowHowToHuman
③ block at any time. Infinite everythings, invulnerability, flying, it's just a big canvas for building.

2 questions: 1. Any chance it will be able to be downloaded? 2. What's the texture pack/mods to make it look like that?
Fornad
1. Nope, but anyone can take a look around on the server! Search for ArdaCraft on Google. 2. Conquest RP and shaders mainly.

Are you going to do the rest of middle earth as well?
LastElf
Doesn't MCME have a 1:10 scale of all of the Middle Earth landscape already? And they've been at it longer? And more well known?
partizanparticlecookery
Just cos' one artist has painted a tree doesn't mean no one else is ever allowed to
MenOnlySeeBasicColours
Damn, that's deep.
Fornad
It's 1:100, and we're 1:58.
LastElf
Been a while since I've seen them, only seen the updates from Jesse Cox. I thought they were 1:10 wild and 1:4 cities. My apologies then
VonFrank42
MCME is 1:100 terrain and 1:1 (full scale) cities and structures. Moria, however, is 1:10 due to sheer size.
Fornad
No problems. One of their guides might have spread some misinformation.
AmbishionE
what texture pack and shaders are you using?
SupermassiveZebra
All of them.

Probably Sonic Ether's Unbelievable Shaders. AKA SEUS

Is upvoting a Minecraft post a bad thing?
NightRush
The "mighty usersub" is a bunch of whiny angry teens who hate everything, especially people who do things they can't.
FellowshipOfTheBling
It is standard imgur policy to downvote Minecraft posts into oblivion. We are in shock right now since the arrow on this post is green.
3stag
Why? I used to enjoy minecraft :o
Eisenhart
But..why is it standard imgur policy to downvote it? I don't understand this mob hate thing.
FellowshipOfTheBling
Most Minecraft posts in usersub are just more of the same *meh* stuff, so the hivemind downvotes them to keep Minecrafters on reddit
Eisenhart
I guess that makes sense. I'm not much of a redditor, so I didn't think about that.
Fornad
I knew how unpopular Minecraft is on Imgur, so I'm actually quite surprised this hasn't been downvoted into oblvion :P

Imgur doesn't like chatlogs of Minecraft. If the post actually has effort put into it, it'll probably end up on the front page.
AmNotFaggot
Good wffort, OP
jymhtysy
To be fair, those chatlogs are the spawn of 9-year olds on servers who use Imgur as a platform to complain about aimbot hacks.
jtb1313
When I have to do shit like that I don't let it be public then just share a direct link to the pic
Millillion
Surprisingly many people think you have to publish images to the gallery to show them to people. What they think not publishing them 1/?
jymhtysy
Yeah, they don't know that. No one except for people who actually use Imgur know that, even Reddit.
