And his PIN code never works, because he’s missing two digits.

I used to work for a printer and binder in the 90s. In the print shop and bindery there were plenty of folks without a full set of digits.

A lot of old-time cutter operators are missing fingers. That is a very old machine, too. These days, they have acrylic hoods you put down, then you have to hold in two buttons on either side of the deck, then press a pedal with your foot. The pedal doesn't work unless both of those buttons are pressed all the way in.

My father lost half of his left thumb in a paper cutter like that. Machine malfunctioned while his hand was in it, both safety systems in place failed. Nicked two of his other fingers as well, but they healed without surgery. The thumb was lost, ended up a nub.

Everyone i used to work with at the printshop who operated a cutter was missing at least 1 finger. They may not have lost it there but they were all a digit short.

Maybe. But he could be like one of my employees, Safety Joe, and knows exactly where they are...

Just because they're not attached doesn't mean they got lost.

Shop accident rates have dropped a fair bit since we put him in charge of the daily safety lectures.

The young employees do seem to pay more attention to stated hazards and risks when they're being pointed at by a guy with just the one finger on that hand.
