Personally I think burning the constitution as a symbolic gesture of what's happening right now in DC is much more poignant, and much less likely to turn people off to your message, but otherwise 100% agree with this statement.

Can we have normal boring democracy instead?

Step 1 is going to be recognizing that neither the flag nor the constitution are sacrosanct, immutable things and both the idea of what a flag represents, and the words written on vellum require that *people* act to manifest them. Whether you believe in doing good because of "the American way" or because of ideals written down by dead men, both are equally fantastical and vanish the moment you stop acting to bring them about.
Show me one atom of justice, and all that.
CrabbyBlueberry
There's an episode of The West Wing that opens with a magic act from Penn and Teller in which they wrap the Constitution in an American flag and then burn both. The flag goes up in smoke, but the Constitution is untouched.

Long ago, I asked one of these people how he figures he is a patriot when he openly hates half the country, screams bloody murder if a poor child gets free lunch, and is eager to destroy its natural beauty for the profit of a few, tell me what makes you a patriot? Didn't get an answer.
tolgabrotha
By the end of WW2 fascism was a thoroughly discredited and hated ideology. For that reason, even the most ossified fascist will not say I'm a fascist. They will instead say they are patriots or some such bullshit. Fascism is an ideology for people with ASPD and there are a lot more of them than you imagine. A second type are the people who are born to be cucks, they can not stand the idea of individual freedom, they NEED someone to put a leash on them. These are your " patriots" and conser

America has been a eddy of swirling controversy for so many years. Progressive efforts to stop the spinning and make things peaceful and benevolent for everyone has been met by right-wing hostility that attacks those efforts and then sticks a propeller into the mix to amplify the swirling. They thrive on chaos and instability... and sucker the gullible masses to believe their toxic propaganda that gets them to join into the fray.
Murdertron5000
And it's disheartening to see the sheer stupidity of almost everyone. They are either completely apathetic or straight up evil.

Those recorded interviews with MAGA...
are simply maddening. And we're talking from trustworthy sources. Not scripted BS. There's no way of telling just how many of them are so clueless. But the Republican Party is banking on that stupidity continuing. They feel the nasty side-effects of Trump's tariff failure and then hear from Trump:
"Tariffs are working, we're getting trillions--it's the Democrats who are messing up the economy!" <-- just outrageous lies.

right wing echo chamber getting worse - now legacy media has shifted right - right wing terror also on the rise, despite leading the nation.

Do other countries make bikinis, tank tops, and pajama pants out of their flags? I grew up in Myrtle Beach, SC, affectionately called the redneck riviera back then.
So many American flag thong bikinis, boxer shorts, sleeveless t-shirts, etc. These same people would also fly confederate flags and call themselves patriots.
eetsumkaus
You'd be surprised. Europe doesn't, but to many, their national flag is an ethnic symbol. Mexico and the Philippines comes to mind.
Muffyns
I think canada and britain do but not to the extent of the us
MilkAndHoneyInMeTea
This is actually against the flag code but nobody bothers to learn anything anymore. The flag is not a decoration. If you're feeling patriotic.... Use bunting
legitbqq
Maybe when they say 'make america great again' they mean reimposing the articles of confederation?

That's because you're ignorant.

Because don't understand that burning the flag is protected by the First Amendment.

That depends on if the flag still represents the constitution. Currently it does not.

Oh shut the fuck up, you spineless bootlicker. Don’t you have podcasters and news pundits to listen to and tell you who to be mad at today?

And i doubt you know the first thing about the constitution

Because you don’t understand what the flag represents, it really is that simple 🤷

The Constitution is what gives people the right to burn the flag. As someone who’s job it is to defend the Constitution and those rights it enshrines I will 100% take someone expressing those rights by treading on/burning the flag over someone who tries to restrict those rights by treading on the constitution. I have my own feelings about the flag but to expect everyone to feel the same is not patriotism, it’s nationalism. The day we make those symbols mandatory are the day they lose all meaning
3rdoption
No, that's the people who create the conditions that make flag burning an act of rebellion.

It's a piece of fabric. The "symbolism" is bullshit you were fed to make you mad about nothing. It'd be cool if you cared this much about the real suffering of real people.

You're welcome to disapprove of anything in the universe. Just please don't make desecration of symbols illegal. The more symbols are revered, the less people revere and remember what the symbols really mean.
Targe0
The flag is simply a symbol of the nation.
The Constitution is the nation's core.
Burning the flag is protected under the first Amendment, and that has been proven in court.
It is seen legally as legitimate protest.
[deleted]
[deleted]
Targe0
Many nations have had people burn their flags in protest, and it's done nothing to create disunion.
If that happens, it's because there was already disunion there, the flag just acts as a focal point for it.
As a single protest isn't going to do anything, but if there's already bigger problems then it can be a flash point incident.
Simply put, it's not about the flag being burned, it's about the state of the country when it is.

Targe0
Burning the flag is the same exact thing as carrying a sign in protest.
They amount to the same exact thing.
And the Supreme court has ruled on this, stating as much.

I prefer someone who IS JUST A GOOD FUCKING PERSON. Fuck the flag, fuck the constitution
iquestionthepinappleeveryday
Considering how completely subjective that is, it might be a good idea to ground at least a few of them in writing, as laws, to ensure there is some kind of accountability or contracts, in case someone ever decides not be a good person from one another’s perspective but the other person also thought they were doing the good thing and it would be a disputed measure. So, laws written down to protect a society is what I have in mind.

The Constitution is the best thing we've got to a guide to being a good person.

I wonder. If the person replied "Wait, when did I say anything about Trump?" .... I wonder how the right could even formulate a response that does not implicitly admit that the list of things being done describes Trump.
