Imposter Syndrome is apparently a thing I have to deal with

I can't believe I haven't been fired yet. I don't know what the fuck I'm doing half the time. 90% of my google searches are for things I really should JUST KNOW. But I don't. Apparently my head can't fit basic things that any developer knows.
I want to learn new things, but find it nearly impossible. Learning new things is basically 90% of being a professional developer. Whether it'd be React, Vue, Laravel or whatever, I can't seem to just... get it. I feel like a damn moron pretty much every day.
I'm afraid my depression might be around the corner again, this time with a vengeance.
Go ahead and bury this in usersub. I just needed to vent to people whom can't fire me.

I've been in IT 30 years at large companies you know. That's pretty much everyone I've ever worked with. Keep up the good work!
rawdog
Shit tell me about it...I manage folks and keep wondering when everyone will figure it out! @OP...Totally normal response to responsibility

Network Engineer: same for me
bluemagister
You weren't hired to know things off the top of your head. You were hired to do things. If using search engines helps, then whatever.
totallynotsuspiciouskermit
I'm a dev have been for the past 8 years, imposter syndrome is real.
SkepticalToast
This. 25 Years Experience, full stack. Still feel like I'm faking it sometimes.
Chimpanzeezeetop
I'm not even good enough to have imposter syndrome.
ShimmerinStrider
You're not alone
whoisqaz
I faked it till this year. Then retired.
SupMelloMike
I'm a dev and I recently got a significant raise. I still have the feeling that I'm just barely managing things.
Minagoroshi
Pretty much all of us are just winging it with misplaced confidence. Very few people actually know what they're doing.
cheesemiggee
Just keep on keeping on. It’ll stick eventually. I had the same problem starting out but am excelling now.
ConsistentlyLateCommenter
Unless you're a doctor it's not as much about knowing the answers but being able to find them. As long as you can do that you're good!
yourfriendlyneighbourhoodtzimisce
Imposter syndrome is very real, and very shitty. But it's just a feeling, not a fact. Remember that our professional lives are measured 1/
yourfriendlyneighbourhoodtzimisce
effort and results. You're putting in effort to learn new things, and even though you feel yourself struggling, you're getting results. 2/
yourfriendlyneighbourhoodtzimisce
You work in a constantly changing and evolving industry, OP; it's impossible to stay on top of everything. You wouldn't expect it of 3/
yourfriendlyneighbourhoodtzimisce
others, so cut yourself some slack. You've earned your position. You've kept it because you're competent. You're a creator. Keep creating.4
KingBizkitGetter
B4 internet we used books and others knowledge. Not as fast and books are expensive, but same thing
blueknot
Being a dev is about being a problem solver. Doesn't matter if you have to google for the specific syntax.
jaypeequeue
Product Owner here. You’re not the only one.
coreunit
Dude IT is pretty much just googling things.
stimpsonjcatt
You know what I've never had imposter syndrome about? Being a bitch. I'm good at it, I'm confident, and I'm always proud to present my work.
stimpsonjcatt
That's it, that's the list. Everything else i feel I'm faking knowing anything. Repeat that you know what you are doing. It'll get there.
siskoisbest
You probably don't even have Imposter Syndrome, you've just tricked everyone into thinking you do.
hoistedbymyownpetard
Check with your Dr if Adderall is right for you, it changed my li...look! A puppy!
rissky13
Yeah, stick it out, things will start to connect in your head (oh yeah, that's just like x) & before you know it you'll be a lead engineer
rissky13
With exactly the same feelings. Well, that's my experience
AlmostCertainlyNotPickles
I'm an industrial engineer who started in IT. My primary function is working with Microsoft Office. I use Google liberally for basic things>

That last paragraph, I needed to hear that, thank you deeply.

I feel the same way. I've been developing for salesforce for 5 years now and I'm still lost.

I physically drive a stick shift. But years before I couldnt. My mind still thinks I cant drive a manual when I do.Dont know how to shake it
SpringToMyWinter
I’m learning JS development and the more I learn, the more I understand what I don’t know. But I have enough tech experience to know that
SpringToMyWinter
50% or more is googling and knowing *where* to look to solve a problem. It’s principles more than particular specific facts.
PutThePRNDLinD
Maybe you need an entirely new career...
dekket
Trust me, I've thought about it. But family needs to be supported...
Rollback211
If its an issue about learning new subjects that just dont stick or trouble with knowldge learning situations have you thought of ADD testin
Rollback211
Or try finding a new way or new explaination or new scenario to try learning it
SclopioPeepio
I Google all day bruh. These days we are expected to learn framework after framework and it's hard. Focus on something you like and get gud.
SclopioPeepio
I have found myself to be really in love with angular and rxjs so now I'm 'the guy' for that and I feel like an expert at something 1/
SclopioPeepio
Instead of an imposter /2
DeadpoolsTinyHand
Something I’ve learned recently is literally everyone feels this way to some extent. It’s probably more pervasive in a dev environment (1/?)
DeadpoolsTinyHand
because everything changes so frequently. My advice is to keep being good at searching, whether Google, Stackoverflow, etc. (2/?)
kickmyballsrealhard
Stackoverflow is a savior
DeadpoolsTinyHand
Know the basics of common languages and how they connect to others. But most important, keep at it. Repetition is paramount for coding.(3/3)
LordKinboat
Agree. I know python pretty well but I forget shit all the time. Been doing javascript for the last few months and it’s been tough.
LordKinboat
Keep at it! Relax. Don’t be hard on yourself.
dekket
Thanks. I guess I need to remind myself of this at times.
SirBagels
Dude I'm an EE student. I feel like a fake all the time, then I have a conversation with my parents or a lib arts major and they're clueless
SirBagels
You've forgotten how much you've already learned. The fact you CAN Google that stuff shows you know what you have to do to succeed.
