The Sheraton was imploded recently. Ironically the town was relegated to the rear end of the donkey for filming. To say underwhelming video from the back of the building was an understatement.
I still remember when the Hudson's Department Store building was demolished in the late 90s in Detroit. They really hadn't estimated what would happen at ground level and all the people who had gathered nearby were running away screaming when the dust cloud came racing outwards into the streets.
On the first one you can see a second round of blasts segmenting both of them while they are on the way down. I'm impressed by the wiring job that held out while the stacks were already falling!
There's a secret to that. The connectors that connect the wires are like fuses with a delay. The signal to detonate reaches all the connectors before any of the explosives detonate. These delays are small, like milliseconds, but that's enough to make sure nothing gets cut off prematurely.
I've got a similar clip but the flying rock clocks a dude in the head and the outpouring of blood is horrific. Not going to post it, obviously, but it's out there.
some of those buildings towards the end looked way too new and serviceable to be doing demo work on... Seems like a waste of resources, but I guess some property developer thinks a 1% higher return over the next 2 decades is worth blowing up a perfectly good (But not high-end luxury!) building.
It's such a huge waste of resources / energy. Not everything can be recycled. Those chinese ghost cities made of hobby foam concrete are a great example. Nothing useful will come from the rubble of those buildings. Nothing of value was created by building them or demolishing them. And yet, several dozen companies made an insane amount of money for zero human benefit.
And a bunch of construction workers stayed employed.
Seems like a wasteful way to allocate welfare to me.
I read a lot of the ghost city talk was actually just fear mongering and most examples now actually have lots of people living there. Basically it was just massive construction and forward planning of new towns etc
Vegas has one of the best demolition crews in the world. The land is so valuable on the strip they can implode a building back onto itself and start new super quick without harming any other casino. Lots of out with the "old" and in with the new there.
Second to last one is the Sheraton in Mahwah, NJ, built on the site of an old Ford assembly plant. ("Well they closed down the Ford plant in Mahwah late last month" —Bruce Springsteen, "Johnny 99") Hotel closed in 2023, guess the pandemic knocked business travel in the head, and was torn down last month, May 2025.
Likely it's cheaper to tear down and build something new that's suited to whatever purpose the site is put to, rather than to try to refit the existing building. And while you're trying to find another use for the building, it incurs costs just keeping it standing: keeping moisture and rodents and mold out, as well as keeping out vandals, thieves, and just plain curious folk who might get hurt and sue.
That makes sense. They are taking it from one investment to several investments that each have many streams of revenue. One building turned into two warehouses that can service 50 high revenue customers each, or a 1000-5000 smaller revenue customers each, would have a much higher potential.
I stay in that area yearly for NEAF. There was supposed to be a huge buisness development there, but instead it was this lonely oversized hotel in the middle of nowhere for decades.

Waitinf for some dumb towers to be the focus of the next demolition.

The property was sold and warehouses are set to be built on the land instead. As a result the building, built in 1987, was demolished.
