I do loft boarding for a living, which means I have to wear a fully enclosed suit and respirator mask, which means that accessing my phone quickly, or at all, is pretty much impossible. Even though people know what I do and know I can’t always answer the phone or text back, I still get shitty passive aggressive messages about it. It’s like, I’m at work, I’m working, you know I can’t always get to my phone, why act like a brat when I don’t instantly answer or text back?
In general I agree. And this gif feels a bit cringe.
Though... There are special cases I have experienced...
Such as, "I'm at the store, about to check out. What else do you need?" And they were JUST answering every text right away. But now that I need an answer, they're not. These are the times it's annoying.
With local friends I'd absolutely agree. We'll go a hot minute before slinking back into the other's vicinity.
With online or long distance, when texting is one of the few means of communication, there's more expectation to carry on conversation or maintain a routine of "I'm doing alright".
It’s a conversation with a beginning, middle, and end that are clearly defined. The first text is the decider: if you don’t respond to the initial one, then there’s no discussion. It’s against the rules to respond to the first, and then ghost. Finally, an emoji 👍 or ❤️ on the other’s last text ends the conversation. So it is written. This is the way.
It’s just polite! -but only For me. My friends and family are not held at the same standard I made up for myself but apparently other people also subscribe. That’s neat :)
I don't want to use my voice, and I don't want to hear your voice. Just take five seconds and text me back. You can still do what you're doing while you're texting - just press send, it's not that hard >.<
Alternatively, if what you need to communicate about is so urgent that you feel the need for a response within seconds/minutes maybe it should have been a phone call. I can see the arguments for both sides of it but texting has always been the “not urgent enough to require an immediate response” line of communication. Even if I was firing off a text every 6 seconds (I was walking to class) for a few moments, that shouldn’t be the assumed response time.

Just call if you need to talk to someone asap.

I have massive anxiety talking to people on the phone. I will take literally any option that doesn't involve talking to someone on the phone

Then, like the creator of the song above, you can wait.

Isn't the whole point of texting is that it's a whenever kind of affair?
jbrightmans
Yes and I thought if it was more urgent, then call.
CeoHuntingSeason
Yeah, just take a couple of years to answer my question about meeting next weekend, you know, answer whenever.

You could put in some airpods so Siri can read the messages to you

Tried this, gets a bit hot and sweaty in my suit and the buds slip out of my ears and end up in my shoes.

YES! The only time it's *not* a whenever affair is when you're on TTY/RTT with another person in an active, ongoing conversation.

I hate that it's treated more and more like instant messaging. FFS, the phone is right in your hand, call me if it's that important.
