Zohran Mamdani has been showing a hell of a backbone and the Dem establishment has been trying to take him down the whole time. Newsom's team knows the DNC is looking for anyone to run in 2028 that *isn't* an actual progressive, and this is their way of pushing him while also trying to steal the limelight from Mamdani's mayoral campaign, because they know that'll endear the party to Newsom. This all of course assumes there'll be an election in 2028, which I doubt.

Man, the last two Dems in office were literally faced with a GOP whose one agenda was sabotage everything the Dems try to get through (e.g. gerrymandering rules), and outright cheat and lie to top up the SC. Obama got the ACA through, FFS. The problem isn't "do-nothing Dems" but the relentless power grabbing on the GOP's side -- which comes easily when you have no moral principles.
