One of the important metrics for different type of disasters is, how far is it to the outside of the disaster zone? That's generally minimized for tornados. So yeah, horrible if it's your house that goes up, but even in a mile-wide EF5 there's help not too far away. Better than ginormous earthquakes, or even hurricanes, not to mention wars etc.

It depends on where the tornado tracks. One of the things that made the Joplin tornado so devastating was that it went right through the city, took out the hospital and most of the emergency services.

The EF scale tops EF3 at 165mph...does anyone know if that is just for ground level winds as opposed to updraft? Is there a tornadologist on Imgur?
