Hi everyone! My name is Kate, aka: KittensForDays. I have been fostering kittens and cats since 2014, and have probably had over 500 come through my house at one time or another. So why do I foster? Well, the number one most euthanized animal in shelters is kittens under eight weeks old, for a couple of reasons: One, they don’t do well in shelters because of all the infectious diseases running around. Their little immune systems just aren’t equipped for that. Second, they often require specialized resources (think: bottle feeding or medications for worms and diarrhea that they almost all inevitably get), and most shelters just don’t have the staff to do that on top of all their other duties. Enter: fosters! I take kittens that would otherwise be euthanized, and pregnant cats who would otherwise be spayed (even up to the day before birth sometimes), and raise them. When they’re over two pounds (usually around 8-10 weeks old), I get them neutered and bring them back to the shelter where they usually get adopted within a couple of days! The shelter covers all medical expenses, I just pay for litter and food and anything else that is involved with raising kittens (toys, cat trees, puppy pads, etc). It can get pretty expensive, especially when they need the top-tier food because they have diarrhea. I have always said, I foster for purely selfish reasons. Everyone who knows me, knows I’m happier when I have kittens in my house. And a lot of people ask me how I give them back when it’s time. I have only had two foster fails, the two girls I have right now that I adopted last year. I haven’t had any other foster fails for a few reasons: One, a bunch of eight-week-old kittens is like a tornado rushing around the kitten room/house, destroying everything in its path. And my legs get shredded by their little claws. After a few weeks of that destruction, I am more than willing to let them go to their forever home! Two, I think about the people who will adopt them - the older couple looking for some companionship, the child who is finding their new best friend, the single person who needs someone to come home to at the end of the day. And three, I just plain can’t afford another cat. One of my girls is special needs, and she’s going to require a lot of medical care in her life. Don’t wanna get spread so thin money-wise that I can’t take care of her. Ok, enough rambling. If you ever have questions about fostering, I am more than willing to share my experiences with you.
