This movie was funny and charming, I liked it. However, the messaging that a flawed but largely peaceful liberal society was improved by adding some conservative men to it was meh. Like, they imagined that liberals would literally ban sex and only the brave Stallone could convince them it was okay to touch each other.
As a liberal leftie, can confirm. Sex is awesome. We're just real picky about the whole consent thing, which it seems some people on the right have a problem with.
Yeah... pretty sure we're all fascists because we force people into situations where they have to state interest or disinterest in sexual activity? Hmmm... now that I think about it, this is not how I remember fascism being described in the history books.
They brought back an overly violent cop from the past to save an environmentally friendly, health conscious society that has grown too disarmed to deal with bad language, much less a murderer. It's pretty clear who is supposed to be liberal and conservative.
I mean if you think a hyper-sterile, sexless, intellectually-deficient society that Others a whole substrata of the population and forces them literally underground, banning all 'offensive' media, ran by oligarchs using illegal means to grab power, is liberal...
These are all liberal stereotypes from the time. They are "sexless" not because they are sex-negative or focused on marriage or family units, they have casual "sex" with machines. They aren't intellectually deficient because they don't value education like conservatives, but instead are too easily offended like liberals (again, these are stereotypes.) The othered underclass are dissenters, not minorities. Both sides blame each other for banning offensive media. Both sides are tied to oligarchs.
I thought about it a bit more over lunch. You can compare and contrast Demolition Man with Judge Dredd, both Stallone movies released just a year apart. Dredd stands starkly opposite: a pure police state where even the slightest crime is harshly punished with imprisonment and death. The cops are hyper militarized. Democracy is dead. Retirement is going to die in a desert. Dredd himself was the result of a eugenics program. These are all more in line with what liberals fear about conservatism.

Honestly, cops probably need clear and unemotional rules of procedure in their work. Most are clearly too emotional for the role.

I thought the message is that society NEEDS violence to remain civilized.

Liberals banning sex... that's hilarious. I've never met a more kinky, open, sexually free group of people than the far left folks. :)

Pretty sure the society was explicitly conservative. Stalone was literally a 'radical'.

Overall, it definitely represents a conservative view of the failings and weaknesses of liberalism in the time period.
