I've struggled with poor mental health most of my adult life. I try to be honest about it and people often don't know how to help. most people have good intentions and say they will be there for you through the hard things. what they don't realize it that people tend to need help and support for years. most of us cannot offer that kind of consistency. it's heart breaking when someone who was there for you runs out of steam. if you can't be there for someone for the long haul don't. it's okay. don't make promises you can't maintain. it's okay to only give what you can but be honest about it. if you are struggling be patient with the people who want to help you. they often don't have the tools to help you get better. if you love someone acknowledge when you can't help them. asking for help has been the hardest thing I've ever done. I'm going to keep doing it for the rest of my life
