Lots of politicians are elected to non-partisan offices (e. g. city councils) in many places. Frequently they're Democrats or Republicans in all but name, of course, but it can take some digging to ascertain that.

They don't do it by paying a bunch of useless middlemen to do the administrative equivalent of digging holes and filling them back in. That's the whole point - their systems are cheaper because those jobs don't exist there.

That definitely wouldn't be enough. If they actually wanted to completely switch to cane sugar, it would have to be imported almost entirely from Brazil, and I'm not sure even they have the capacity to produce enough.

The freezing and boiling should kill any parasites, and boiling should get rid of at least some heavy metals (e. g. inorganic arsenic) as well. (There really shouldn't be that much heavy metal contamination in the average backyard, but arsenic was used on cotton fields for a long time so it's fairly common.)
Every time I mention that on here I get massively downvoted, but that does seem likely.
