The flat-earth view fails not only in this, but also fails to properly explain why daytime/nighttime and seasons work the way they do on globe earth, how the moon and its phases work, how eclipses work, motions of the planets, and quite a lot of other things. Many of these problems have ad hoc flat earth explanations, but they are pretty much all mutually exclusive, contradicting each other.
